I hope y'all had a wonderful weekend! My honey was out of town this weekend, so I had the house to myself and got lots of quiet time. It was awesome!!
I did a 16 mile run on Saturday!
My battery died right before I reached 16 miles! But I promise I did it!
I also wasn't able to listen to my music the last 5 miles, because the battery was running low. That made it really difficult. I hate that I can't use Runkeeper and listen to music at the same time on my long runs, because of the battery! I'll have to figure something else out...
Before I even got to 2 miles, I got a bad cramp in my stomach. I knew it was because I started my run in the afternoon, instead of the morning. That always happens when I run later in the day.
But I just pushed through it for the next few miles and it went away!
I finally made it to 16! I was really surprised, but 16 miles felt easier than my 15 last week! It was absolutely wonderful! Of course the thought went through my mind "only 10 more, and I'll have run a marathon!"
Of course at this point I can't imagine running 1 more, let alone 10 more!
But, I KNOW I can do it. The reason I know that is because I remember when I could only run 3 miles, I couldn't imagine running 10 more, for a half marathon. So if I can do that, I know I can do this too!
| WORN OUT!! |
After this 16 miles I could run my finger along my face and get tons of salt!
Why is that? I take 2 GU's during my run, I also drink gatorade and water. Any idea what I'm doing wrong or what else I need to do?
Have an awesome day, friends!!
Did you run this weekend?
Any idea why I get salty?

I don't know, but I get super salty too
ReplyDeleteKatie congrats to you on the 16 miles wohoo!!!
ReplyDeleteI have never run...:( I want to start running though.
When is your marathon?
You should start! I haven't signed up for a marathon yet. Possibly in the fall.
Deletewhoaaaaaa 16 miles!! amaaaaazing!
ReplyDeleteI would struggle SO badly to do 1 mile without music, especially towards the end - way to goooo!
Thanks girl! It sure wasn't easy without my music, but I had no choice but to keep going!
DeleteI get super salty too! And if I don't wash my face before I dry off you can see the salt on me!!
ReplyDeleteAs for music I was thinking about that and I have an old ipod nano so I will probably use that for music and just use the iphone for the apps. Plus it is tiny and clips on to your bra strap. If you do not have a nano I think you can get a shuffle for pretty cheap I just do not know how much the battery life is on one of those or how much music it will hold.
That's how it is for me too! So weird!!
DeleteThat's a great idea, I do have an ipod nano that I forgot all about! I'll bring that for backup next time!
I use a Shuffle for music and my phone just for the App. I'm doing Bridge 2 10K right now and it's brutal, but I've only done 1 half so far, and I don't think I have it in me to do a full!
DeleteWhen I am running a long run I will get super salty..I always have face wipes in my bag for after races...I just think it is because I sweat and salt is part of the sweating process..I don't know though
ReplyDeleteI need to get some wipes to keep with me! It's such a weird feeling!
DeleteCongrats on 16! No clue about the salty thing. Why do you think you get a cramp during afternoon runs...food? Just doing my research.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Carli! Yes, it's because I'll have eaten by that time. Normally in the mornings I'll just have a banana or something light, so it doesn't bother me. Anytime I run in the afternoon or evening, that happens though.
DeleteI salt out like crazy too! My face literally is half white with the salt on it.
ReplyDeleteWay to go on your long run! I have yet to tackle that long of a distance........kinda nervous just thinking about it!!
Lol, mine too! It's so crazy! Oh, you can SO do it girl!! You've done longer distances before, you'd do great!
DeleteSo funny because I get salty too!! In fact, my black hats are almost white when I am done a long run from the salt/sweat. Ummmm you look gorg after running 16 miles!!
ReplyDeleteWow! That is just the craziest thing!
DeleteOh, thanks Teresa. You're so sweet! :)
Congratulations on your 16 miles, great timing too!
ReplyDeleteThe body starts to loose the salt during long runs, generally during my long run I take a salt pill per hours to replenish the salt in the body or else you end up with heavy cramps and dehydration.
Good to know! Thanks, Gauri!
DeleteCongrats again on your 16...mileage is all relative as you know...it is all daunting until you do it! I have a separate inexpensive mp3 player because I don't want to use the battery on my phone for that...and I use a Garmin for time. I get super salty, too. Perfectly normal. It sounds like you are fueling well but maybe a little less than I do...I did 6 or 7 servings of gels/blocks during the marathon...prob would have done at least 3 or 4 for a 16 miler. You need the salt in the gels to replenish what you are losing and to prevent hyponatrenia. I think I take in more than most people though because I'm trying to protect this one kidney I have!
ReplyDeleteI will see if adding in some more gels will help. It really doesn't bother me, it's just weird! Thanks, Jen! :)
DeleteCongratulations on running 16 this weekend! If you can do 16 on your own (especially without music for a whole 5 miles) you will do amazing in a marathon... the crowds and adrenaline will definitely push you through the finish!
ReplyDeleteI literally laughed out loud when I saw the title of this post because I thought the same thing when I finished my run today. I usually take four gu packs during a marathon and sometimes even add in some kind of electrolyte gummies like shot blocks. I also recently have been drinking nuun after long runs to replenish.
Thanks, Lori! I hope that's true!! The marathon plan I've been following only has me going up to 16 miles, which seems crazy! I plan on going up tp at least 20 though, just to make sure I can do it!
DeleteI've heard a lot about Nuun, I need to try that!
Good job on the 16!! I have to do 13 next weekend by myself and I am not looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Megan! You can do it, girl! I really don't mind running alone. That way I can run at my own pace and get lost in my world of music. Well, that is if my battery hasn't died!
DeleteIt's just the salt that you've sweated out. GUs are good, I also alternate taking salt caps and an electrolyte cap on runs loner than 1.5 hours. Then I take an electrolyte cap after the run as well which I think helps with recovery, at least it feels like it for me :) huge congrats on your 16 miler!!! So fantastic! For me, hitting mile 17 in the marathon was so great because it meant I was back in the single digits for the count down, so you're almost at my magic mile ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! That's a great way to look at it, I'll remember that when I do 17 this weekend!
DeleteI'm so proud of you for knocking out 16 miles! You're a beast, Katie! I'm not sure why you salt instead of sweat. When that happens to me it's because it's so hot out that the sweat evaporated on my face. It's really funny after races down here because most people have visible salt lines.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Gina! That would be a funny thing to see! It's good to know I'm not the only one! :)
DeleteCongrats on the 16 miles! I can't believe you're not actually training for a marathon. Amazing. You'll be so ahead of the game when you actually sign up.
ReplyDeleteI get super salty, too. I never really thought of it as weird, though. Just part of the sweating process. I don't know, though.
Thank you, Clarinda! I know I just need to find one and just sign up!! That's good to hear that getting salty is normal. At first I thought maybe something was wrong, because I'd never heard of that!
