Does Weight Watchers Really Work?

Hello friends!

My legs are finally not sore anymore after my VERY hilly half marathon on Saturday! I did get in a 4 mile run on Tuesday, and today will be doing 6 miles.
My first full marathon is in 2 weeks!! I'm so excited, and getting more confident, the closer it gets.

The reason for my post today is to talk about Weight Watchers. I have been on every 'diet' out there, and have lost weight on most of them. About 13 years ago I was at my highest weight ever, and joined WW and lost 25 lbs. Although I did gain some of it back over the years, my weight has never been back up as high as it was then.
Lately I've been against diets, because I think if you exercise and eat right, that's all you need, and you just gain back any weight you've lost, because you're not really learning HOW to eat right.
I don't think WW is a diet or a fad though.  I think it really teaches you how to eat and self control. Not to sound vain- but I feel like I already know how to do that! I did lose 30 lbs. last year on my own.
But this year I have not lost ONE pound! In fact, I've gained a few! And I haven't changed my eating habits, the only thing that has changed is I'm running a lot more.

So, I'm thinking about joining WW. I think maybe having that structure, and writing down everything I eat, will help me. Maybe that will help get off the last 30 lbs. I need to lose.
Also my Mom just joined, and my twinnie is thinking about joining too. So it could be a family affair!

Have you done Weight Watchers?
What would your advice be?

  2. WW! When I first started loosing weight in 2011, I used Weight Watchers and it was a huge eye opener to me. I realized I had NO concept whatsoever of portion control/size. I dropped about 10-15 lbs on WW before I stalled out and endured a 5 month slump when the scale didn't move at all. I will always be grateful for what WW taught me about portions. :)
I did a lot of reading and decided to ditch WW. Instead of tracking points, I started keeping track of my calorie consumption, not as much how many, but what kind. I shoot for 40% protein, 20% healthy fats and 40% carbs......after I changed that, I started loosing again.
Now, I've hit that same wall and I haven't seen any decrease in my weight this year, which is highly discouraging. I think for me, a lot of it is some bigger issues that my body is fighting right now.
When it comes down to it, it's really what works best for you and your body to feel great and be healthy. WW may work be a great fit for you. The only major beef I have with WW is that for me, I found myself eating a lot of low-calorie, processed 'diet foods' because they were low points. It would be better for me to use 6 points on a 4 oz steak than the same 6 points on a serving of graham crackers, an apple, 12 yogurt covered almonds, kashi cereal and almond milk........
The danger of WW for me was I sacrificed nutrient-dense foods because they were too many points-- who can 'afford' to eat 1/2 an avacado when it's a whopping 4 points!
    Anyway- good luck, Katie!!

    1. I think if I go into it knowing I won't use those points on crap and processed stuff, it'll be easier. I can see how someone brand new to all this would use that as an excuse to keep eating the junk they've always eaten. I know it's discouraging to be stuck at a plateau, but hang in there, girlie, we can do this!

  3. I have done WW and was very successful with it. I agree that it is not a diet - as they say, "It's a lifestyle". If you are running a lot more and still eating the same you have probably put on a couple pounds of muscle which is great. If you truly feel you have more weight to lose and were successful with WW before - then go for it! Good luck!!

    1. I probably have put on some muscle, I know I've lost some inches too, so I'm happy about that! Thanks, Brittany!

  4. Get fit in the gym (or on the road :)), lose weight in the kitchen! Nothing negative to say about WW here. I am like you in that I just do my own thing, but their plan seems to be one of the more healthy lifestyle options as opposed to some crash diet. You already look beautiful though! :)

    1. Oh thank you, Jen! I just feel like to lose the last of this weight I need that structure and accountability. I've been trying to do it on my own, and can't get it off!

  5. I did WW, about a year and a half ago. I lost 11 lbs in about 4 months and to me it just wasn't worth it. It really bugged me how the leaders pushed sugar free, fat free, artificial crap because they were low in points. It was also a crap ton of money that was better used in other places.

    1. I understand, that doesn't sound worth it. And you would think the leaders would know better than to push that crap!

  6. You may want to try myfitnesspal since you are already a pretty healthy eater. Using myfitnesspal will help you control your portions, the app is really easy to use & most foods are already in the, plus its FREE. If your like me, I am a healthy eater but sometimes just have portions larger then I should.

    1. I actually downloaded MFP on my phone a few weeks ago, and I used it for about 2 days! Not sure why I didn't stick with it! I should give it another try though I sure like free!

  7. I use the Lose It app - it's free and provides you with an opportunity to track calories and nutrients. I have never done WW so I don't have an insider's perspective on the program - but if all you want to do is track and control your foods, it seems to me that you could accomplish the same thing by using a free service. Try changing up the variety and intensity of your workouts too - I am doing that now in hopes that it will help me lose these last 8 lbs

    1. That really is all I want to do, but maybe knowing I'm paying for it would help me to stick with it more. Changing up my workouts is a great idea too, I'll try that!

  8. I shed 60+ lbs thanks to WW. Took me 2 years and 2 months and Ive maintained the loss for 15 months. I loved it so much that I am celebrating my 1 year anniversary of becoming a WW Leader tomorrow. I love the plan because NOTHING is off limits. I still drink beer and wine, but make sure to count for it and move more. WW changed my life. I am now running my 3rd marathon (Boston on April 15), registered for my first triathalon and am doing the Dopey Challenge in Disney in Jan 2014. All thanks to WW.

  9. I had a few friends who did it and it worked and more that did it and it didn't work. I think it's all about really committing to a diet/workout regimen and sticking with it. Weight watchers just gives those who don't know tools and accountability. I did hear that their online program was great though.

    1. I think what I need is that accountability and structure. It is all about commitment! If I do it, I think I would just do the online program too.

  11. I lost almost 60 pounds on WW when my son was born. I have lost and gained alot of that since then,. and a few times WW helped. I do think that you skip out on a lot of great foods because they are too high in points, but I also stopped drinking my calories and I stopped eating pizza because of the points values, so it isn't all bad. I have actually been considering going back, but with my racing almost every weekend, I am not sure I have the time! Right now I am counting calories and using SparkPeople. Good luck!

  12. I've never tried it, but I'm not against it. Family support is great, too. I say if you're joining with your mom and sister, then why not? Take advantage of learning ways to be and eat healthier.

But also remember, it's not about the number on the scale but how you FEEL and how you LOOK and how you FEEL about how you LOOK. LOL. :)

    1. I know that's so important to not get caught up in the numbers on the scale. I really struggle with that! I think it'll be easier doing WW with family too!

  13. I've heard people gain while training for a marathon and cant figure out why but when I've gained during this training cycle I can TOTALLY link it to bad food choices. When I eat within my calorie range, I lose or maintain. Right now I'm about 3# higher than my 'feels good' weight' but I've eaten DOUBLE my amt of calories every day this week (I have no self control with food this week-its crazy!!!!) I've only tried a few 'ways of eating' as I don't really need to lose weight (but I do need to lose fat-my tummy looks awful!) and I had the best results doing 'food combining' (where you don't eat certain foods with other foods). Saw a MARKED changed in the way my yummy looked after only 3 days!
I've never tried WW as I don't want to have to 'pay' but I've always wanted to try it to see what its about!

    1. I'm pretty sure I can link my gain to bad choices too. Well, maybe just too much ice cream. :) I've never heard of food combining, I'll have to check that out!

  14. I became a lifetime member years ago and then went back again to lose after my 2nd kid was born. I kept my weight off for years until I went back to college two years ago. Over my 2 years in college full time I gained around 20 lbs. I was so upset about it. After the gal who writes Runs for Cookies began talking about the new WW program and the points, which is new since I've followed their program, I decided to go to a meeting and get all of the new materials. Lifetime members can get the materials for any new program revisions. Once I started to really follow the program and keep track of everything, I really began to lose. I'm now within my goal range so I don't have to pay when I go to meetings. I have to weigh in once per month. I'm 2 lbs away from where I know I should be. I'm wearing the clothes I wore when I started college and I certainly look much better in running tights!!! I ran a race on Monday (April Fools day) and my picture ended up on the race's Facebook page and I was really surprised, in a good way, I could really see the difference! I can fit into my first running skirt again! It hasn't fit in a long time. It's too cold right now to wear it but I'm hoping to wear it at one of my favorite races in May!
So, anyway, what I'm rambling on about is that I have had positive results with Weight Watchers. Some of that, I have to say, is because I have learned so much from the Runs for Cookies gal. I'm terrible at cooking and can't come up with ideas on my own but have used so many of her ideas. I'd probably have the same meals over and over and get tired of it but not really know what else to do.
Do you read the Runs for Cookies blog? (I'm thinking that's how I wandered onto yours!) She is the person to ask about Weight Watchers.
Whatever you decide, I wish you success; it's really fun to fit into old clothes that haven't fit in a while and it's even more fun to try on clothes in the stores! Oh, and the pictures that others take of you while running are more pleasant to look at!!

    1. Thank you so much for sharing that, Lorenda! Congrats on losing and maintaining!! I'm pretty sure I follow Runs for Cookies, but I'm going to make sure. I didn't know she did WW either. I agree, it is SO much fun to put on clothes that didn't fit before and to buy new clothes in a smaller size!

  15. I have done Weight Watchers in the past - in college I lost about 30 pounds doing it and in grad school lost the 15 pounds that had crept back on doing it. I actually recently joined again as my first year in Alaska has not been kind to my waistline and I was starting to not fit into any of my jeans or pants. I think I need the extra accountability that keeping a food journal provides, especially because I tend to be lax about portion sizes otherwise.

    1. I think that extra accountability will really help me too. It's nice to know you're doing it too! :)

  17. I can't give any insight if WW works or not; just wanted to offer some support. I think you have the right idea with the healthy eating and exercising but I definitely think there is something to be said about the group atmosphere of WW. It seems like people are the most successful when they know they are accountable and have people to talk to. You're beautiful Katie, don't forget it!

  21. I lost about 40 lbs with WW 15 years ago and kept it off for 10 years. Menopause crept up on me and I gained back 25 of those pounds over the past 5 years. I tried MFP several times but never lost more than 2-3 lbs (at a rate of never more than 1/2 lb/week!!!) and always gained it back plus more! I went back to WW 8 weeks ago (doing the online membership) and it is working great for me. Already lost 9 lbs so I am on my way. I am a vegetarian and cook most of my own food, so I love being able to eat what I like...no processed/packaged crap. But I definitely get in a little pizza and other goodies from time to time, as long as I account for the points. Quite honestly, I rarely use more than half of the weekly "extra points" that they allot you! The online membership has people you can chat with when you need extra support, and I have taken advantage of that a couple of times....very helpful!
