Columbus Half Marathon Recap

Good Morning!

Yesterday I ran the Columbus Half Marathon, my 4th half! I drove up on Saturday afternoon, and had been planning on going alone. (I feel bad dragging my family along to my races, I know they don't enjoy them as much as I do!) At the last minute I decided to ask my sweet cousin, Janelle, if she would like to come along, and she said yes! I was so happy to have some company on the 3.5 hour drive, and just knowing someone is waiting for you at the finish line makes SUCH a difference!
We got to Ohio, I picked up my race packet, and then we set out looking for the park where the race would be held. I always like doing that ahead of time so I don't have to worry about getting lost or not finding it the morning of the race! We had a little trouble finding it. Apparently it's a huge park, with lots of different entrances, all miles apart! But we finally found it.

The town doesn't have a lot of restaurants to choose from, but we found a little sandwich shop and THIS. Absolutely amazing!!

Then we headed to the hotel, I laid out everything for the race, and went to bed at 9!
I got the sweetest text from my mom.
My mom is amazing! I am so thankful for her!

I woke up at 5:30 and we headed to the race around 6:20. Start time was 7 a.m.
The weather was perfect! It was about 60 degrees, no humidity, it was wonderful!

Almost time!!

And we're off!

I didn't take any pictures on the course, but it was very pretty. Most of it was in the shade, which was wonderful. It was an out and back course, very few hills. We went over 4-5 bridges- which really messed with me! I've never ran on a bridge before, and it made me very dizzy!
At mile 7 I took a Honey Stinger, I also got water/gatorade at every stop. I'm trying to perfect the art of running while drinking. I usually just spill it all over myself!
I was really, really hoping to make it in 2:15, but it just wasn't meant to be. My time was 2:35, which of course I'm disappointed with, but what can ya do!  (20 minutes longer than my goal!!)
It was nice to beat this group of people I'd been running with for the last few miles. :)

It was a great race, not too big, maybe 1000 people. It was put together very well, and was a great experience! I have to give a HUGE thank you to Janelle, for coming along with me. She's a photographer, so it was nice to have some extra pictures!

Let's go home, baby!

#4 done! Next race is the Women's Half Marathon in Nashville, on Sep. 28! Maybe, just maybe I will PR there. Here's to hoping!!

  8. A few years ago did you ever imagine that you'd plan a weekend trip around getting up early in the morning to go and run 13.1 miles and then call it fun?

    1. Thanks Kim! Between now and my next race I'm getting back into speed work intervals. I'm not sure, but since I've gained 15 lbs, I can totally feel it as I'm running. That really seems to slow me down. I could be wrong, that's just my guess. So speedwork and getting this weight off and that should do it!

  14. Half marathon #4!!! That's awesome! Even though you didn't make your goal time, you still have another half under your belt (running shoes? hee hee) and that just makes you a stronger runner and racer. Congrats on another half!!!!

  17. I used to run through the water stops, too. The I read several big name runners give advice that you should walk briskly through. Instead of slowing me down, I actually sped up. Maybe because I was actually getting more hydrated? IDK, but it's worth a try!
