Torn muscle and a race on Sunday!

I have some words to the wise today. Well, in my case, unwise.
If you haven't done any strength training in over a month, don't jump back into it expecting to lift the same amount without getting hurt!
That's what happened to me. Why did I take that long off? Honestly, I don't know. I told myself once the boys started school, I would get back into it. So, that's what I did. Wednesday I got back to my Slim in 6 dvd's. These are my FAVORITE workout dvd's ever. For some reason I thought I could use the same amount of weights (10's), and go just as hard as I used to.

I noticed right away I had lost some strength, but I kept going, kept pushing myself.
Well, yesterday my arms were pretty sore, but nothing that I'm not used to, I love that sore feeling- it means I worked hard! Last night I woke up around midnight and I couldn't straighten my left arm. My right arm was extremely sore, but I could straighten it, although now it's starting to hurt if it's totally straight too.

This is as straight as it goes, and even this hurts!
I was hoping by this morning it would be back to normal, but it's not! I gotta tell ya, I'm in a lot of pain. I did put some icy hot on it, which seemed to help. I guess I don't get to lift today. :(

This weekend I'm traveling to Columbus, OH for the Columbus Half Marathon on Sunday!!
Thankfully I don't have to straighten my arms while I'm running!
This will be Half Marathon #4. My best time so far was 2:25, an 18 minute PR from my previous race. My goal this time is 2:15. Totally doable for me, I WILL make it!

QOTD:
Have you ever pulled, strained, torn a muscle? Any advice for me?
What race do you have coming up next?

    1. Thanks girl! Which half are you doing in November? Sometimes it is hard to stick with the plan, but it definitely pays off in the end!

  3. Advice - go see a doctor! They can test if you have strained muscles/tendons or a ligament sprain and give you meds or something to immobilize it. I sprained my wrist in 2009 (from landing the wrong way off a manmade water slide) and it took about 6 weeks to heal, and I had to have it in a removable brace.

And I have always said I would rather injure an arm then a leg so I can run. Although, now that I teach a strength class, I should quit saying that.

    Good luck at your race!

    1. Wow, 6 weeks is a long time! I agree, I'm glad it's my arm and not my leg! I'll definitely go see a dr if it's not better next week. Thanks Kim!

  4. Good luck on your race this weekend! I hope your arms feel better. It's a good thing you're not doing something that requires arm-straightening, like monkey bars or something lol

  5. In 2009, I kept pulling my right hamstring. After the third time, I finally took time off, real time, not just a few days. I stopped running completely and not just cut back. I can't remember how long I took off but it was somewhere around 6 weeks. I also got sports massages and did stretches for it. Had I stopped for more than 3 days when I first pulled it,and let it heal, I might have been able to run the trail 25K that I had planned for that Oct instead of having to change to the 10K. I guess we learn the hard way!
When I was strength training regularly, there would be times that I was more sore than other times. There were times it would hurt to raise my arms up to wash my hair! Hopefully, your arm is just be extremely sore.
Aren't you glad you didn't hurt a leg??!! Good luck at the half marathon. Have fun!

    1. I always have to learn things the hard way too. I hope it's just really sore too, but as of this morning (Saturday) both my arms won't straighten out all the way! I am thankful it's not my leg though!! Thank you, Lorenda!! :)

  7. The only injury I have ever had is a spinal fracture. It required six weeks minimum for healing and I had to go through physical therapy. But I'm back now!

And the next race on my calendar is the FitOne 9k. I'm pretty excited about that!

  11. I have been horrible about cross training lately. Lately on those days I opt for something fun to do with my son instead of going to the gym plus it's something I really don't enjoy which makes it even harder. My next race is RNR Virginia Beach 1/2 and then Hartford ING 1/2 in CT in October and finishing up with MCM. Hope your arm is nothing serious!

    1. It does make it hard when you don't really enjoy it. Have you tried a spin class? I love doing that as cross training! You'll be sweating buckets, but it's an awesome workout! Sounds like you have some great races coming up! Thanks Lisa!

  14. Can't wait to hear all about your awesome PR that you are going to get!! SMASH it woman!! Hope your arm feels better soon! I did that the other day-- I did a WOD with 75 pullups (soo freaking tough!) and by the end my forearms were killing me! The next day my left arm was not happy with me. I took it easy lifting that day, but still used it and by the 3rd day I was good as new! Hope yours feels better soon!!
