Golden Island Jerky Review and Giveaway!!

I was contacted recently by the lovely people at Golden Island Jerky and asked if I would like to review their beef and pork jerky!
Of course I said yes, my family and I love jerky!
The flavors I received were Grilled Barbeque Pork, Mandarin Orange Beef, Chili Lime Beef, Korean Barbeque Pork, Teriyaki Pork and Hickory Black Pepper Beef.
My favorite was the Korean Barbeque and the Grilled Barbeque. The Grilled Barbeque was sweet and smoky, with a hint of cinnamon and spice. Deelish!
Golden Island Kettle cooks it's beef and flame grills its pork jerky in small batches, with no preservatives, no hormones and up to 8 grams of protein per serving! I've gotta say, these do taste like they're fresh off the grill! This stuff is fabulous!!

Long Run, ProCompression and Nuun

Happy Monday!

I hope you all had a fabulous weekend! Saturday I ran 15 miles.
Oh, I hate being a slow runner more than ANYTHING! My first 5 miles were a little under 10 min miles, but after that I slowed down. I wish I could just keep up that pace! If I don't get any faster by my marathon, it'll be at least a 5 hour marathon, and I was hoping to get under that! Well, I'll keep trying!

I work my Pro Compression socks for the first time. I really loved them! The only thing is they were almost impossible to put on and take off! It took forever to do that! I'm wondering if I got the wrong size, or if they're supposed to be that way. I got a Large, which is supposed to be the correct size for my height. Once I got them on, they were fine though. Are they supposed to be so tight?

15 miles done! The weather was perfect, and it was a perfect run!

I also bought some Nuun and drank that for the first time during my run.
I seriously almost threw up everytime I took a drink. It was disgusting!! I will never drink it again. I guess it's the carbonation or something, but I just couldn't handle it! Which was too bad, I'd heard so much good stuff about it! I hate to throw away 4 tubes of it, does anyone want it?

What did you do this weekend?
For your Pro Compression socks wearers, are they supposed to be that difficult to put on and take off?
Do you like Nuun? Do you want mine? :)

My 5 Things Friday!

Hello friends!

Is anyone else glad it's Friday? I AM! It has been one of those weeks that I'm glad to see end! Of course I'm still missing being on my Bahamas Cruise!! But, life goes on...

My girl Ali, over at Running with Spatulas, did a 5 Things Friday post, and I think it's a lovely idea, so I'm going to do the same today. Here are mine from the week!

1. I made a deelish Spinach Strawberry salad with an orange-honey dressing. Simply fabulous!!

2. My first pair of Pro Compression socks! I am SO excited, I've wanted a pair of these for so long! I plan on wearing them tomorrow for my 15 mile run!

3. My new shoes. I'm trying to rush Spring, so I can wear these! You can tell me that you think their ugly, it won't hurt my feelings! But I think they're HOT!
4. My amazing brother through-hiked the WHOLE Appalachian Trail last year! Over 2,000 miles. I am so stinkin proud of him! Now that he's home, everyone wants him to share his journey (schools, library community, Boy Scouts). We got to hear the story again last night. It never gets old!
Yes, that is him on top of the mountain!
5. I miss this beautiful place!
And, that's all folks!
What are your 5 Things?
Is anyone else doing a long run tomorrow?

Training for first marathon- how far should I run?

Good Morning, friends!

Before I get to my question, I have to show you what I created! It's called Beet 'Pizza'!

This was SO good! I roasted the beets with olive oil, salt and pepper, for 35 minutes in the oven.
I made a mixture of goat cheese and lowfat ricotta, spread that on whole wheat Naan bread, then put the beets on top of it. Put it back in the oven for about 10 minutes, added a little spinach on top, and voila!

Now for my question:
I'm currently training for my first marathon, on April 20th. The plan I'm following only has me going up to 16 miles. But I think how can I possibly be ready to run 26, if my long run only goes to 16??
So, I emailed the guy who designed the plan, and asked him about it. He sent me these articles about your long run before a marathon.
http://runnersconnect.net/running-training-articles/marathon-long-runs/

 http://running.competitor.com/2012/07/training/are-you-overemphasizing-the-marathon-long-run_55719

http://runnersconnect.net/running-interviews/the-problems-with-traditional-marathon-training-plans-and-the-magic-long-run-formula/

Basically they say that you only need to run 16-18 to be ready for a marathon. He says 20 or over is a great confidence booster, but not necessary.
"The total amount of time on your feet during a 3 plus hour run will break down the muscles and completely exhaust you, which leads to a significant delay in recovery time and means you can’t complete more marathon specific workouts throughout the following week, which I believe are a more important component to marathon success.
Furthermore, your body doesn’t see a significant increase in training benefits after running for 3-hours. The majority of physiological stimulus of long runs occurs between the 90 minute and 2:30 mark. To add insult to injury, running for longer than 3:30 significantly increases your chance of injury. Therefore, you’re leveraging some very slight training benefits for increased fatigue and injury risk."

That all makes sense to me! Since I'm running 4 days a week, I can understand that if my long run is 20-22 miles, I won't be able to run 5-7 more 2 days later!
So, I have 8 1/2 weeks left, I think I'll keep my long runs at 15-16, and do an 18 and 19 once each. Maybe it's just a mental thing, but I need to KNOW that I can run a marathon! And the only way for me to know for sure is to do that distance ahead of time! But I definitely don't want to get injured ahead of time and not be able to do the marathon!

I need your advice! What do you recommend? What worked for you?

Marathon Training and Fried Kiwi!

Happy Monday!!
I hope you all had a fabulous weekend!
First of all, I'm featured on Mindy's Runner Spotlights, at Road Runner Girl! Check it out here! Thank you, Mindy!!

I am counting down the weeks until my FULL marathon. I have 9 more! I feel like I'm getting more nervous as each day goes by. Between now and then, I have 6 races!! I'll have a very busy next 2 months!
Starting today I'm getting back to my marathon training plan. The plan I've been following only has me going up to 16 miles- which seems crazy! How can I be ready for 26, if the most I do is 16? (The most I've done so far is 18) So I'm changing it a little, and will be doing at least 20, possibly more.

Last night as I was checking out some Instagram pics, I came across one from Larisa, at zero to twenty six point two. It was fried kiwi! I had never heard of doing anything like this, and I just happened to have a kiwi and coconut oil, so I had to try it!
I just sliced a kiwi, put it in about 1/2 tsp of coconut oil and fried it for about 3-4 minutes on each side. It was SO GOOD!! I've also found out you can do this to bananas, as well! Can't wait to try that!

Have you ever 'fried' fruit?
Did you run or race this weekend?

Carnival Fascination Cruise Recap!

I'm back!!
I had an AMAZING time on my cruise! It was beautiful and so relaxing! I had a very hard time coming home!

We boarded the ship in Jacksonville, and from there went to Freeport and then to Nassau.
In Freeport we went to Garden of the Groves. It was beautiful gardens and waterfalls.

I'm a little surprised that Freeport is a port for cruise ships. The majority of it is just a run down, deserted, poor town! It's really sad! Our tour bus driver said it's in that condition because of the economy. I loved the Gardens, but was not impressed with Freeport at all.
The next day we went to Nassau. I loved it!! Beautiful!
Boat ride to Blue Lagoon Private Island
Yes, the water was really that color!

I want this house. And the yacht too.

Private Island

Loved Nassau!!
The food on the ship wasn't very good. It wasn't terrible, but I had heard that it was excellent, so was a little disappointed!
This tilapia was good!

I'd heard SO much about this Chocolate Molten Cake.
It was chocolate pudding cake, with vanilla icecream.

My breakfast every morning!
I was planning on running on the track, but the morning I went to do it, that level had been blocked off because of the wind. :(
I just went to the gym instead. If only this could be my view every day!!

The last day was 'fun day at sea'. I got to lay out all day and work on my tan, relax and drink some yummy fruity drinks!

Yes, I did wear a 2 piece swimsuit for the first time in my LIFE! I've worked so hard to be able to do that, and I finally got to! I still have about 30 lbs. to lose, so I'm still not happy with my body. But it was so nice to actually feel comfortable wearing it! (I will not be posting those pics. I'm not that comfortable yet! ;))

While we were at sea, we heard about the other Carnival ship that is stranded on the ocean! I feel so bad for all those people! That could've easily been us!

We had a wonderful time! I definitely want to take a cruise again next year!
Now that I'm back to reality, I'm going to work on losing the rest of this weight, and keep on training for my marathon in 8 weeks!!!!

GoodBelly Probiotic Juice Review and Giveaway!

I was recently contacted by GoodBelly Probiotic Juice to do a review and giveaway of their juice. It was perfect timing, because as you remember, at the beginning of the year I was on a 21 Day Juice Fast.
So, I decided to do their 12 Day Challenge, after finishing my fast. You drink the juice every day, for 12 days. If you don't love it, it's free! You can also get coupons emailed to you.
The flavors I tried were Mango, Pomegranate Blackberry and Blueberry Acai.
Some other flavors are Cranberry Watermelon, Pink Grapefruit , Tropical Green and Tropical Orange. They were thick and smooth, just delicious!

Here is some info on their juice:

  • They are dairy free, soy free and vegan, making them an excellent option for anyone who experiences digestive problems.
  •  All the juice flavors sold in quart-sized cartons are USDA-certified organic or organic compliant, and contain 20 billion live and active cultures per serving! A number of studies have shown that the probiotic blend found in GoodBelly helps promote healthy digestion.
  • Unlike many 'live and active cultures' found on the market, GoodBelly's probiotic strain survives the stomach's acidic environment in order to reach the rest of the intestinal tract.

I enjoyed these, and they really helped my digestive system start working again, after my fast! ;)

I added some frozen strawberries to the juice, making it a delicious smoothie!
 Find more info here:

The generous people at GoodBelly have offered to send one of my readers some coupons to try their juices for free too!
To enter the giveaway all you have to do is leave me a comment, letting me know which flavor of probiotic juice you would like to try!

For additional entries, you can like me on facebook, or subscribe to my blog. Let me know in the comments that you did!
Winner will be drawn using random.com next Tuesday, Feb. 12!

14 Mile Treadmill Run and 5 by the 5th Virtual Race

Good Monday Morning!!

I hope you all had a fabulous weekend! I sure did!
Saturday I had planned on running 18 miles outside, but Friday night we had a winter storm warning advisory, and were supposed to be getting a lot of snow, so I wasn't sure how that would work out, but one way or another I knew I had to get my 18 miles done!
When I woke up, it looked like this outside!
I know I could've ran outside, but I love doing things that my head says are 'impossible', so I decided to do all those miles on the treadmill! The most I've ran on the tm was 8 miles, so I wasn't sure if this could even happen!
I decided to split it up, do 6, take a break, 6 more, break, and than the last 6.
So I ran 6, stopped about 5 minutes, drank some water and ate a GU. Then did another 6. After that I decided to just suck it up and go outside. I needed a change of pace!
So I bundled up and headed out! I ran 4 outside, then came back inside and did the last 2 on the treadmill.
I forgot to take a pic at 14! Also the time restarted after 77 minutes.
When it was all done, I had completed 18 miles, 14 of them on the treadmill! It honestly wasn't too bad at all! I watched the documentary "Hungry for Change" while I ran, and it was excellent!
I decided to use this run for my 5 by the 5th Virtual Race Series, that Laura, at Mommy Run Fast created.

We had a Superbowl party last night and I knew most of the food would not be healthy. Including what I was making! Snickers Popcorn! It was amazing! I was glad I had ran 18 miles the day before, so I could take ONE bite of this stuff!
Ok, I had more than 1 bite, but not much more!
I also made this amazing fruit bowl.
I ate a lot of this!
I love that when you're out of the habit of eating junk and crap, you don't really even crave that stuff anymore! I actually wanted this fruit more than I did the sweets!

Today I will be packing and packing. Can't wait to get away from this COLD weather and get to the Bahamas!!

Did you run this weekend?
Do you find that your body craves GOOD food more than it does bad food?

I am so blessed!

Good Morning, my friends!

Did you all get a lot of snow last night? We did! The kiddos are out of school today, so I get to spend the day snowed in with my sweet boys!
 Speaking of sweet boys...
This cutie patootie turned 15 yesterday! I have got to say, I am SO blessed to have the best stepsons in the whole world. They came into my life when they were 6 and 7. I can't believe how fast time has flown by! We connected from the very first time we met, and we've always had a great relationship. I just adore my boys and I'm SO blessed that they are in my life!

Today I am featured on the lovely Jesica's blog, at Runladylike. She has a series called Friday Fitspiration where she features inspiring stories. I am so happy she chose to feature me today! Check it out!

Tomorrow is my long run day! 18 miles! Am I a little twisted because I look forward to my long runs more than almost anything??
Well, not more than my upcoming cruise on Wednesday!!!

What are your plans for the weekend?
