Run the Bluegrass and a Sweet Friend!

Tomorrow (Saturday) I'll be running my 3rd half marathon! I've ran a lot of virtual half's, but this is the real thing!

It's called Run the Bluegrass, at the Keeneland horse park in Lexington. They say it's one of the prettiest races in the US, but also very hilly! They even said don't expect to PR at this race! That scares me a little...
But, I'm going to plan on getting a PR anyway! My last half was in November, and I got an 18 minute PR! I'm not expecting another one that big, but I would like my time to be 2:20 or less. (First one was 2:43, second was 2:25) I've done LOTS of running since then, at much longer distances, so I'm hoping my time will be faster! It's also FINALLY supposed to warm up Saturday- which I am very thankful for!!

Tuesday night I finally got to meet the beautiful Brittany!

We had been blogging buddies for awhile, and it finally worked out for us to get together! We took a spin class and then went for froyo! (She was so sweet to indulge my froyo addiction)

Very, very rarely have I met someone and felt an instant connection, and had that feeling of being so comfortable together, and feeling like we've been friends for years. That's how I felt with her. We have so much in common, it's amazing! I can't wait to get together again!

Are you running or racing this weekend?

3 Things Thursday! Snakes and other things!

I am linking up with Myranda, at Pretty Living for Three Things Thursday!
Today's three things are: 3 things people would be surprised to know about you.
Here are mine!

1. I hate sports. I'd rather watch paint dry or grass grow. Since I'm so tall, people have always asked me if I play basketball, I've never even had a desire to play.

2. I have 6 sisters and 2 brothers, and my Mom had ALL of us at home! Yep, she's my hero.

3. About 10 years ago I was startled awake at 2 am by a loud CRASH in my bedroom. I quickly sat up and saw this HUGE snake slithering across my dresser. The crash was perfume bottles and other things being knocked over. I'm not talking about a little garden snake, y'all. I'm talking about a 6 FOOT LONG, FAT SNAKE. I am not kidding. This is exactly what it looked like.
I froze and didn't know what to do. I grabbed my phone and called Jeremy (this was before we were married). He told me to go sleep on the couch, and stuff a blanket under the door so it couldn't get out. It was a few hours before I could fall back to sleep, but I finally did. I woke up at 6 to get ready for work, and guess what the first thing I saw was, when I opened my eyes? That snake. He had escaped my bedroom, and was now in the living room, just a few feet from me!
I got out of there as fast as I could. J and a couple other guy friends came over later to catch it, and it was nowhere to be found or seen again. I lived in the country, with a field in the backyard, so I guess it came from there. I moved a couple weeks after that. That was the most terrifying time of my life!

Tell me 3 things about you!

Can I REALLY run a marathon??

Hello, friends! I hope y'all had a good weekend!

Saturday was my 20 mile run!! I'm very glad to say that I did it. No quitting or stopping early this time! :)
Here's how it went:
Remember I told you about the .75 loop I usually run around, and I just don't think I can do that for 20 miles? Well, I did it. Yep, I'm crazy!!
There's another little deserted path in that area with a distance of 3.5 miles. I don't like running on it alone, because I've heard too many horror stories of bad stuff happening to runners! But I did run that once.

I did great until mile 18. (Which is the farthest distance I've ever ran) After that I could hardly even walk! So the last 2 miles were a little running, lots of walking. At 20 miles, I did not think my legs could even carry me one more step!
A lot of people say it's a mental thing, your body can take it, but you brain thinks you can't. But it was the opposite for me! My mind kept wanting to go, I kept pushing and pushing, saying I could do it, etc. But my legs just felt dead!
Is that the 'wall' people talk about? I've always wondered what the 'wall' was.
Thankfully, through the whole thing I had no knee or foot pain!

I still have 4 weeks until my marathon. Next week I have a half marathon, so will only be getting in 13, the next week I can do another 20 miler, but the week after that will be taper.

Saturday I knew it would NOT be possible to do 6 more miles. So now I'm terrified!!
Can I really run a marathon? Did I hit the wall at 18, and that's what I have to just push through?
Help!!

Hair extensions and a few other things...

It's Friday!!!
It's really, really cold. I am not happy about that at all! But, let's talk about something more pleasant, shall we?
Here are my 5 Things Friday!

1. I had a great spin class tonight! I went with my friend, Melissa, which always makes things more fun!!

2. Do you remember this amazing Red Velvet Cheesecake that my twinnie made? Well, she has done it again!! Here is her newest creation.

She made the cake for my sister's baby shower. It's a raspberry fudge truffle with fondant like you've never tasted. I'm telling you, there are just no words.... I'm so proud of my twinnie. She has found her calling and made her dream come true!!

3. I got hair extensions!! They are so much fun. I love having long hair again!

4. I won 2 giveaways this week! Woot woot! I won some protein shakes and bars from Melanie, at Happy Being Healthy and Premier Protein. And some Lock Laces from my girl Amanda, at TooTallFritz. I can't wait to try them out!

5. This is going to be my new wake up time.
It's only an hour earlier than usual, but I know it will FEEL much earlier! My reason for this? My weekly marathon training runs are not happening! Would you believe I have not ran since my 10 last Saturday?? That is NOT the way it's supposed to be! I just don't have enough hours in my day to get it in, and my evenings have been so busy, that my running gets left behind- and I HATE it! So, early mornings it is! I keep telling myself it'll be worth it, it'll get easier, blah blah.

Saturday I will be running 20 miles! I think I will have to find a new route though, because I don't think I can run 20 miles around the same .75 mile loop. I just can't do it.

What are your plans for the weekend?

Don't you wish my twinnie was your twinnie, so you could taste all this deliciousness??

Guest Post for National Nutrition Month!

I was recently approached by Carolyn, who blogs at Full on Fit, asking if I would be interested in having her write a guest post on the rise of Type 2 Diabetes and childhood obesity, an issue many families are facing. She has some personal family experience with this, and I do as well. Last year my 11 year old niece was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I think this is valuable information!

Prevent Diabetes and Exercise During National Nutrition Month!

February was National Heart Month. Even though it’s one month of the year, it’s important to always be aware of conditions that may contribute to heart disease. Did you know that heart disease is just one consequence to develop if diabetes is left untreated? My young cousin was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes just a few short months ago, and I have been working ever since to try and gather information and create healthier habits for all my family members.

Now, as March is National Nutrition Month, it’s important to focus part of our prevention efforts on a healthy, nutritious diet. Here are some pointers:

Some Nutrition Tips
1. Make healthy meals at all times
It may seem tough at first if your family is not used to eating healthy meals on a regular basis. In order to make the switch, slowly try to mix in healthy options with each meal, until your whole meal is eventually made up of healthy choices.

Try this recipe for a creative, healthy appetizer:

     1. Take 1 ½ pound eggplant and peel it
     2. Cut the eggplant into ½-inch slices

3. Sprinkle the eggplant slices with Kosher salt

4. Allow the slices to sit in a colander for 30 minutes and then, rinse them with cold water. Pat dry.

5. Combine 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 cloves of garlic in a small
         glass cup.

6. Microwave for about 20 seconds.

7. Mix ¼ cup of 2% Greek yogurt, ½ teaspoon of cumin, 1 teaspoon of
dried mint, 2 tablespoons of water, salt to taste and a pinch of
         cayenne in a small bowl.

8. Heat an outdoor grill to medium-high or heat a grill pan over medium-high heat. Brush eggplants slices on both sides with oil and garlic.

9. Grill the eggplant for 15 minutes while turning frequently.

10. Drizzle the mint sauce on the eggplant slices.  Enjoy!

2.  Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that fight free radicals. Free radicals are responsible for many chronic health conditions, including diabetes and heart disease.

3. Stay Away From Vending Machines and Fast Food
Most foods in vending machines, and fast food too, contribute to heart disease and obesity. Both of these health conditions are directly related to diabetes, and it's important to remember to make healthy choices at all times – even when on the road during a busy day.

4. Eat lean protein.
Fatty proteins contribute to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.  Try to have a portion of lean protein with each meal – it should take up ¼ of your plate at each regular meal, and is also a great option for a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack.

My Exercise Tips
1. Exercise On a Regular Basis
Make exercise a priority by making it a regular part of your day Try to fit in 45 minutes – 1 hour each day for at least five days each week.

2. Enroll Kids in Organized Sports
Football, basketball, soccer, tennis, cheerleading, and others help kids to develop good exercise habits and social skills. Plus, the kids will be having so much fun they won’t even realize they are actually exercising!

3. Go Cycling
Most parks have numerous cycling trails for exercise and training. Cycling is visually and physically fun, and it’s an activity you can do as a whole family.

4. Do At-Home Workouts
At-home workouts are great because 1. you can work out in the comfort of your own home (thank for pointing out the obvious Carolyn…) and 2. you can decide what kind of workout you want to do! We like to do Zumba, Pilates and Yoga when we gather as a small group in my basement. Doctors from Syracuse’s Orthopedic Center explain various benefits of yoga, such as increased balance and posture, flexibility, bone and joint health, and even the ability to regulate stress. These are all great benefits to each and every one of us, regardless of our age and “experience” level!

Have you or someone you know been affected by Diabetes?
What does your family do to stay active?
Do you like eggplant? ;)

Recommitting after falling down.

Hello friends!

My plan this weekend was to run 18 miles on Saturday. Well...I only ran 10.
I was so mad at myself for not pushing through and completing 18! My sisters and I were having a baby shower for another sister, and I was just thinking of all I needed to do. Also around mile 6, suddenly the back of my ankle started hurting real bad. This was a new ache, I'd never had that before! I kept going, but it was hurting pretty bad by mile 10.
Both of those were my excuses for quitting early. I know 10 miles is good, but with only 5 weeks until my marathon, I need to get in more miles!! When I got home I 'googled' the pain in the back of my ankle, and discovered that's my achilles tendon. As soon as I read that, I said "ohhh noooo!!"
It's still sore today, but is much better. I do wonder if I would've even been able to do all 18 with it hurting anyway.

Like I said, I have 5 weeks until my first marathon! I'm running the Carmel Marathon, in Indiana. They say that it's a fast, flat course, perfect for first timers. I'm so excited, and have confidence that I can do it!
As for my weight loss, I've lost 33 lbs since last June. But I have not lost ANYTHING this year. This is SO aggravating! It makes no sense to me how I can be training for a marathon, run 25+ miles a week and not lose a pound!
Now for the bad news, I've put back on 8 lbs!! How? I have NO idea! But I'm just sick over it. Again I wonder, how can I be training for a marathon, taking spin and boot camp classes, do a weight training dvd 4 days a week and GAIN weight?? I am taking my measurements, and have lost a few inches, but not a lot.
I know one thing I just need to give up is ice cream. That is my weakness. Other than that, I eat very healthy, no junk food, fried food- none of that. I do find myself thinking a lot "I just ran 5 miles, I can eat a few extra bites..."
I SO badly want to look like her.

And I know I could!! There is no reason why I couldn't have that body. I want a flat stomach and muscular arms.
Even as I ran my 10 miles, I could tell I've gained weight. I just felt 'heavy'. I always complain about being a slow runner, I know I would be faster if I wasn't carrying around an extra 30 lbs.

So, I'm re-committing!! Starting today- no more ice cream. I have to completely give it up. I love froyo, so may still have that occasionally. I wish I had a meal plan to follow, I feel like I do better when my meals are planned out for me. (I think that's why I did so well on Nutri System, because there was no guessing what I would be eating!)
But I know I can do this. I just have to remember what it is that I want. I have to remember that ice cream is not worth it. I can do it. I WILL do it. I'll stand back up, shake myself off, and keep on going.
I'm thankful that I have this blog and I have all of you to keep me accountable. I'm so glad I can share my struggles and failures without the fear of being judged. Here I go again! :)

5 Things Friday!

Happy Friday!!

I'm having a little trouble coming up with 5 things, must've been a slow week...but I'll do my best!

1. As you know, I'm running the Chicago Marathon. I'm so ridiculously excited, I just felt like I needed to mention it again. Sorry! I promise I won't talk about it all the time!

2.  I don't know why I just discovered Edamame. I made it with soy sauce. It is amazing. I could pretty much eat it every day!

3. Today I got the honor of making Iced Oatmeal Raisin Cookies for Brian Head Welch. If you don't know, he used to be the guitarist for Korn. A few years ago he became a Christian, and started a new band called Love and Death. You can hear a few minutes of his story here. It's amazing! My honey has become friends with him and they'll be hanging out after his show tonight. He's always on the road, and never gets home baked things, so I made him some cookies. :)

4. Remember my 30 Day Vegan Challenge? Well, it lasted 10 days. It was HARD! My 3 week juice fast was easier than that! I think the hardest part was trying to find food that didn't have eggs and dairy in them. I do plan on staying vegetarian though. Ever since giving up meat a couple years ago, even though I had started eating it again, I still couldn't eat it without thinking "this animal used to be alive", and other things!!

5. The Bahamas! I am dying to go back here, and on another cruise again! I don't think we'll go on the Carnival again though. I want warm weather SO bad!

That's all, folks! My plans for the weekend are an 18 mile run tomorrow, my sister's baby shower, dinner with my family, then celebrating St. Patty's day with a girlfriend at an awesome little blues/jazz bar on Sunday!

What are you doing this weekend?
What are your 5 things? Or 1 or 2?
Do you like Edamame?

Big News...I'm in!

I'm in the Chicago Marathon, that is!!!
I'm SO excited!! I'll be running for the Ronald McDonald House Charity.
I have to give a shout out to my friend, Amanda, at TooTall Fritz. If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be doing this. I had thought about it, but not seriously, until she asked me about it. She recommended I run for RMHC, and offered to let me stay with her the night before. How could I turn that down??
This is just a dream come true, something I never ever thought I could do!!

I just have to brag on my amazing husband for a minute. :) After he found out I was in, he posted this on my facebook:
"You are a constant source of faith and hope for those that never believed that they could accomplish and exceed a goal in their life...You are SO strong, SO passionate in your pursuit of what you want...I will always be the voice in your ear saying, "If anyone can do it, Katie, you CAN!" Don't stop running after your dreams because you can have whatever your heart desires! I am so proud to call you mine..."
He is the most supportive, loving, encouraging man in the world!

I took another Spin class last night, it was much better than the first one! I sat near a fan, adjusted my seat right, the instructor was awesome- it was perfect!!

QOTD: Are you running the Chicago Marathon, or know someone who is?

Blogs Jean Likes, Fitness Magazine Giveaway and 17 Miles!!

Happy Monday, my sweet friends!

Did y'all have a good weekend? Mine was fabulous! Although I did lose an hour of sleep, thanks to the time change. But I'm loving the day light lasting longer in the evenings!

Today I am featured on Jean's blog What Jean Likes! I am also hosting a giveaway there for a year's subscription to Fitness Magazine. That is one of my favorites magazine's, so I wanted to give someone else the opportunity to read it as well.
I've loved getting to know Jean better through her blog, she is such a sweet girl. She also lives in Hawaii, my dream place to live. I live vicariously through her and her gorgeous pictures! She also host's a blog hop every Friday, which is a lot of fun. Make sure you check it out!

Saturday was a beautiful, sunny day and I ran 17 miles! A few days ago I was whining wishing that I had a running buddy.  Well, it just so happened that my girl Vivian, needed to run 10 miles, and we were able to run together on Saturday!
It was SO much fun!! Those 10 miles flew by faster than ever! It was so wonderful to be able to chat, laugh and just forget about the miles as we ran.
We also ran a path that neither of us had ran before, and it had some major hills, which was great!
You can't tell from the pic, but this felt like a mountain! The path curved around and went all the way up.

It was a perfect run! And I got several compliments on my socks too!

Tell me something fun you did this weekend!

My First Spin Class!!

Happy Friday!!

For quite awhile I've been wanting to take a Spin Class, but couldn't find any near me. Then a couple days ago my SIL told me that her church (20 minutes away) offers spin classes, for only $2 a class!! I was SO excited!
I signed up right away and even convinced my Twinnie to come with me!!
We were the last ones to get to class, so we got to sit in the very back! I thought that was a good thing until I realized the big fan did not reach us! From the very beginning I was DRIPPING with sweat. I could hardly see because it was getting in my eyes! (I thought the hat would help with that, but it didn't.)

See that fan up in the top, left hand corner? Yea, couldn't feel a thing!

There was a guy there helping the 'newbies', so he adjusted the seat for me, but the whole time I felt like it was way too high. My arms and lower back are so sore today, because for the whole hour I was totally supporting my body weight on my arms and felt like I was bending over too far! I don't know if it's supposed to be that way??
Before the Sweat Fest!
Lesson learned: get there early and get a bike near the fan, and adjust the seat where it's comfortable to ME!
But I loved the class, and plan on going once a week!

On Tuesday I started a 30 Day Vegan Challenge. It's going great! I never realized how little I actually eat meat, eggs and dairy! I honestly don't feel like I'm giving anything up. I thought the hardest thing would be to give up my icecream. But my friend, Kim, at ilaxSTUDIO, who's also a vegan, told me to try some vegan 'icecream'! I had heard about them before, so had been wanting to try them. I went shopping last night and found Almond Dream. I got the Chocolate Bites and the Praline Crunch. O.M.G. They are both amazing!!

Do you know how excited I am that I can do this vegan challenge AND still eat my 'ice cream'??!! Of course it still has calories, so I won't over do it. Well, try not to anyway. ;)

Tomorrow I'll be running 17 miles. 6 more weeks until my first marathon! Tomorrow is finally supposed to be a warm, sunny day- I can't wait to get outside and run!!

QOTD:
Have you taken a Spin Class? Does my form look right?
What are your running plans for the weekend?

Wanted: A Running Buddy

Ever since I started running a couple years ago, I've always ran alone. I've trained for my half marathons, and now my full marathon alone.
I love it! As we all know, running is an escape at times from a crazy life. I love just going out there with my music and forgetting about everything for awhile. I love getting alone with my thoughts and the solitude. There's been times where I've even been glad that I'm alone, that way I don't slow down a running partner, or she slow me down, I can just do my own thing!

But lately, I've been feeling alone. Really alone. I wish I had someone to run with, someone to talk with for hours about running, nutrition, makeup, American Idol- whatever. Someone that could push me, and I'd do the same, someone who shares my passion and whom I can share the battle and beauty of the road with!

This is what I want!
I've made so many friends through blogging, and I OFTEN think "I would love to run with her, if only we were closer!"

What about you? Would you rather run alone or with a buddy? Or both?

Tonight, I'm going to take my first Spin class! I can't wait!!

30 Day Vegan Challenge and Jerky Winner!

First of all, congrats to Christa for winning my Island Jerky Giveaway! I've sent you an email.

This weekend I watched a documentary called Vegucated. It's about 3 average, meat-eating New Yorkers, doing a 6 week vegan experiment. Meaning no meat or animal by-products, eggs or dairy.  It details their journey and struggles, and the meanings behind being a vegan.

2 years ago I was a vegetarian for a year. I still can't believe I gave up meat for a whole year! Honestly, it was not that hard to do at all.
My reason for becoming vegetarian for was out of compassion for animals. I had watched a lot of videos of how the animals that we eat are killed and treated so horribly, and it broke my heart, and I just cried as I watched them. I couldn't take it! So, I decided to stop eating them. Then I heard about the health benefits of being vegetarian, so that was an added bonus too. I'm not sure why I started eating meat again, but I never felt any guilt about it, it's just what I wanted to do.

So when I watched this documentary, I decided to take the vegan challenge for 30 days. I know the only trouble I will have is giving up my ice cream and not using creamer in my coffee.
But I can do anything for 30 days. And who knows, maybe I won't want to go back, and maybe my ice cream addiction will be broken once and for all!! ;)

I know people will say I'll be tired and weak, I won't be able to gain muscle, I won't get enough protein, etc.
Some will roll their eyes and say I'm too sensitive, or shake their heads and say "here she goes again" (ahem...my honey).
But, that's ok! I'm going to find out how my body responds to this new way of eating and get more creative with my cooking! Ya never know until you try, so I'm going to try it!
Here's to Day #1 of my new adventure!

Red Velvet Cheesecake and a long treadmill run!

Good Morning!!

Well, the Color me Rad didn't happen on Saturday. It was COLD and snowing! So we decided to transfer to the July race instead. Here are a couple pics from the Color Run last year.
See, it's much more fun when it's warm outside! I'm glad we decided to postpone it!

But THIS did happen!!
Red Velvet Cheesecake! I can't even put into words how amazing this is! My friend, Abby said it's like cake and cheesecake got together and had a delicious baby. That's exactly it! My twin sister made it. She bakes desserts for a restaurant here in town, I'm telling you, her desserts are to die for! Yes, she's taking orders. :)

After eating a slice of that, I was so glad I had a 16 mile run on schedule! I decided to do it on the treadmill. I'd rather do it there, then turn into an icicle outside!
I ended up just doing 13 because I ran out of time. But it went great! I had heard so much about the show Downton Abbey, so I decided to watch a couple episodes while I was running, to see what the fuss was all about! Well, I think that it the boringest (is that a word?) show ever! I had a hard time keeping up with it, and could hardly understand them because of their super thick accents. Maybe it just starts out slow? I don't know, but I don't think I'll be watching anymore of it!

Are you a Downton Abbey fan?
Would you like to order a cheesecake? :)
Tell me about your run this weekend!
