My year of running 2014

What a year this has been!
Honestly, I'll be glad to get 2014 behind me. It's been a bad year for my personal life, my weight and with my running.
I'm ready for a brand new year and some changes!

I've ran 12 races this year.
1 full marathon
3 half marathons
6 5 k's
1 10 miler
1 33 miler (that was my 100 mile attempt, but with bronchitis and a sinus infection, I couldn't breathe, and wasn't able to go any farther.)

My mileage for the year was 662. That sounds really low, but I was out for a couple months with a torn tendon. And because of that I had to cancel THREE full marathons I had planned for this fall.
See what I mean, just a bad year!

But it's not all bad. I have some amazing friends who have stuck with me and been there with me through it all. What more could I ask for.
As for 2015, there is something pretty huge that I want to do. I'm not even putting it into words yet because I think it might be a little too crazy, even for me.
But I love crazy, so we shall see.

Happy New Year, my friends!!

Christmas and my Jawbone UP24!

I hope you all had a great Christmas!
Mine was pretty good. My parents don't celebrate it, so that makes ours pretty easy. We don't have to travel to a lot of places or try to figure out how it's all going to work out- it's pretty laid back and easy.

Jeremy and I just weren't in the 'Christmas spirit' this year, so we decided to decorate our sago palm tree, instead of getting a real tree. And we did that on Christmas day, right before his family came over.
Even funnier, Jeremy started taking down the lights and the few decorations while everyone was still there! Who does that??
2015 will be better!!
It's still pretty though!

We spent lots of quality time together

Silly sis in law warming her hands by the fire

I had been wanting some kind of fitness tracker for awhile, but didn't know what kind I wanted. Well, my friend Kerry did an awesome review of the Jawbone UP24 and the Fitbit. After reading her comparisons, I decided to go with the Jawbone. Somehow Jeremy read my mind, and got it for me! It's a fitness watch that tracks your steps, calories burned, even the hours you slept and your quality of sleep. I love it!

Saturday I got out for a short run. It was supposed to be a long run, but turned into a short, slow one. At least it was better than nothing!
What did you get for Christmas?

Does anyone have a Jawbone, or any other type of fitness tracker?

Chicken Soup, Broccoli Cheese Soup and a rainy run

Merry Christmas Eve!

For the first time in AGES I got to run outside today. Lately I've been running on my treadmill, because I'm a chicken when it comes to cold weather.
But today the temperature was 53, even though there was a light rain the whole time, it was amazing!
Awesome 5 miler!

Last week I posted pics of 2 soups that my Mom and Twinnie made for me when I was sick. I got some requests for the recipes, so here they are!

Momma's Chicken Soup

3 lb. bag frozen chicken breasts
8-12 cups chicken broth
Couple celery stalks
Small onion
3 whole garlic cloves
Simmer in crock pot on high for 3 hours.

Strain broth and throw away the veggies. Put broth back into pan and chop chicken and return to crock pot. Add mixed veggies, potatoes, whatever desired.
Cook on low for an hour.
Add one can cream chicken soup.
Sprinkle in a little Ore Ida instant 4 cheese mashed potato powder, stirring to thicken.
(Times may very. My mom made this on the stove top, I just do everything in the crock pot!)

Annie's Broccoli Cheese Soup

1/2 cup butter
1 small onion
2 cloves garlic
Saute onion and garlic in butter in big pan.

16 oz. frozen broccoli
2 lb box chicken broth
Stir in broccoli and cover with chicken broth.
Simmer until broccoli is tender, 10-15 minutes.

1 lb velveeta, cubed
2 cups milk
1 T. worcestershire sauce
Dash dry mustard
Dash nutmeg

Reduce heat and and stir in cheese cubes until melted.
Mix in milk and remaining ingredients.

To thicken, dissolve 2/3 cup cornstarch into 1 cup water. Stir into soup, stirring frequently.

 Enjoy!

Do you like running in the rain?
I love it!!
What's your fave soup?
Broccoli cheese!

Marathon training week 3 and a Christmas Card exchange

Last week's marathon training was non existent. I spent much of it sick, so wasn't able to run. It was miserable!
But what made it better was that my sweet Twinnie and my amazing Momma brought over some food.
Twinnie made the best broccoli cheese soup you've EVER tasted. And of course since she's my twin, she shares my obsession with ice cream, and knows it makes everything all better.

My moms famous chicken soup. To die for.

Thankfully, I'm almost all back to normal, so training has resumed/

For the first time, I signed up with the girls over at Fairytales and Fitness for their Christmas Card exchange. I received a Christmas card and a Starbucks card from Linda. It was just what I wanted! And I even got to use it today meeting a friend for eggnog latte's. Yum! Thanks Linda!

Are you guys ready for Christmas?
Honestly, I am not.
I am just not into it this year. Isn't that awful?? But it's coming whether I'm ready or not, so I need to get on the ball!

Meijer Healthy Resolutions and my 2015 Goals

I was recently contacted by Meijer to come up with a 2015 New Years Resolution, around the topic of movement.

Meijer is Supporting a Healthy You by stocking all of the great products you'll need for your own resolutions and for one stop shopping. They sent me some great items to keep me moving!

I've never really made 'resolutions', but I do make goals! My main goal for 2015 is to lose the weight I re-gained this year (ugh), and of course to run marathon #4 and #5 in the Spring.

Maybe your goal is to just start moving. Maybe run your first race, or 100th race!
If you're just starting out, as I did a couple years ago, I always recommend starting with the Couch to 5k program. That's what got me started on this journey.
Just start somewhere, don't give up, and if you do 'fall off the wagon', that's ok! What matters is that you get right back to it.

Tell me how YOU intend to get moving or stay moving in 2015!

This post is sponsored by Meijer, but all opinions are my own.

3 Things Thursday!

I am blogging from bed today. My whole family, every single one of us, has bronchitis. How crazy is that! And I didn't think it was contagious, but apparently it is. Ugh.

Here's a few things happening in my life lately.

1. Friends+Beer+Chex Mix= FUN
These sweet girls and I had our annual chex mix exchange. So much fun!
I think Julie (green shirt) wins for cutest festive outfit!
Check out our Chex Mix board on Pinterest for lots of recipes. I had no idea there were so many different ways to make it!

2. Glamor Shots
What do you think when you hear the name Glamor Shots? For me, I think of them kind of as a joke. Big, teased hair and crazy bright makeup.
Well, 17 years ago I was taking some classes at Cosmo Modeling Agency, and needed some pictures. So, I had them take some for me.
Not too bad, right?
Well, my friend Melissa found a Groupon for a bouidor photo shoot with them. I've always thought that sounded like so much fun. I mean, who wouldn't want sexy, fun pics for your significant other?
Let me just say, I'm glad I didn't spend more than $20 on that Groupon. We had the WORST photographer EVER. She was even the owner of the studio! She was cold and rude, and only cared about getting us in and out of there fast. Needless to say, my pics turned out horrible and I sure as heck wasn't going to spend one penny, let alone the $299 they wanted for them.
Lesson learned, there is a good reason that GS has a bad reputation.
We had to take this pic fast before
the mean photographer came back
in and yelled at us!
3. Marathon Training
Last week I started cleaning a few houses, until I can find a job that I love (I have a banking interview next week). I probably burn at least 1000 calories at every house. What a great workout!
So, because of that, my running really suffered last week. I think I only ran 5 miles all week. I'm not sure how my running will go this week since I'm sick. But I hope to feel better by Saturday, so I can go for a long run!

Have you ever had Glamor Shots taken?

Tennessee getaway and some cute babies

I hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving! We had a few days of warm weather, and it was marvelous!

Over the weekend I escaped to Franklin, TN for a little solo vacay. I haven't traveled to a whole lot of places, but Nashville and Franklin are a couple of my favorite places.
On Friday I drove around looking for a place to do my long run on Saturday. I found a really nice park, and it was perfect.

The weather was lovely, and so was my 10 mile run.
My gorgeous sister and brother in law came up from Wisconsin with their adorable babies. I hadn't seen them in over a year, I couldn't believe how much they've grown! I loved meeting their Robert for the first time. They've been fostering him for awhile and are now adopting him. His story is absolutely a miracle.
That fro though!

My sweet Rainor bug
My sis is now pregnant with #3! That means she'll have 3 babies under 2 years old. Man, she's got the life! I told her I'd gladly take one of them for her. :)

Last week was my first week of marathon training, and I finished it with 19 miles. That was my highest weekly mileage in months! It feel soooo good to be back to it!

How was your Thanksgiving?
Did you go Black Friday shopping?
(Once in a lifetime was enough for me!)

Turkey day and a getaway

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends!

My day started with a 5 mile treadmill run. I was supposed to run a Turkey Trot this morning, but ended up skipping that and doing a treadmill run instead. :(
I watched a James Patterson movie on Netflix while I ran.
Excellent movie, but not so great to watch while you're running. Because it's hard to run and cry at the same time. But I succeeded.

This evening I will be having Thanksgiving with Jeremy's family and then bright and early tomorrow morning I will be taking off on a little getaway alone. I'll be going to one of my favorite places in Tennessee. I've already been looking for some running trails and I plan on doing lots of running, reading and praying. My goal is to come back refreshed, with some clarity and hope.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Turkey Trot and Marathon training again!

This weekend I ran a Turkey Trot in my town. That was fun, I never run races in my own town! (They rarely have them here) It rained the whole time, but at least it wasn't cold.

In other news... today I started training for Marathon #5!

I'll be running the Asheville Marathon, in March. Jeremy and I went to the Biltmore this summer. I can't wait to run a race there!

So begins my training. Running funk or not, I've got to get out of it now!
I always use Runkeeper for my training, so that's what I'll be using again.

What race are you training for?
What did you do this weekend?

Runner's guilt, Runner's funk

Is runner's guilt a real thing? That's what I was wondering today, and I believe it is.

I think I have runner's guilt, because I'm in a running funk. I don't know what's wrong with me. Well, I do, but I guess they'd just be excuses.

My running lately has been horrible. I mean, embarrassingly horrible. As in, the past 6 months have been my slowest months. I did have an injury and had to take 6 weeks off. But I just haven't gotten back into it.

This time last year I was running over 80 miles every month. Well into the 90's. Of course I was training for a 100 mile race, but dang!! Lately my months have been in the 20's. The 20's!!

I still love running. I am passionate about it. Every time I finish a run, I am always so glad I did it. I love being a runner and I'm so proud that I am.

I've alluded a little bit to what's been going on in my personal life, and for over a year now it's been hard. Very hard. I feel like I'm at the bottom of a pit and my fingers are numb from trying to claw my way out.
To add to that, I can't find a job, I've gained weight, and it's freakin cold outside!

So, those are my excuses. They should make me WANT to get out and run, right?

Why do I feel guilty? Because I've let people down. Some people became my friend back when I was training for 100 miles, back when I ran 20 miles around a track, or 20 miles on my treadmill, back when I was an inspiration. That's the Katie they knew and liked.
Now when I'm discouraged and having a hard time, they're gone.

BUT, there is hope. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, in regards to this running funk anyway. Why, you ask? I have 2 marathons next Spring, in March and April, and training starts Monday!

So I am determined to come out of this. No matter how I'm feeling. I will do this.

How do you get out of a funk?

Fall Soups- Butternut Squash Soup and Sweet Potato Lentils

Today I am linking up with Lean Lena for Tasty Tuesday!

One thing I love about Fall and Winter is making soups again. I always make them in my slow cooker, and that thing gets used at least once a week. (Best invention ever!)

Last week I made Butternut Squash Soup. It is a lot of work cutting up all the veggies, but it is so worth it! I used her recipe, but changed it a little bit for the slow cooker.

1 butternut squash; peeled, de-seeded, and cubed
2 carrots, cut in thick slices
1 med onion, cubed
2 gala apples, peeled, cored, and cubed
3 cloves of garlic
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 bay leaves
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp of dried sage
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp white pepper
1 cup light cream
32 oz vegetable stock, pre-made or from scratch

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Toss squash, carrots, onion, apples, and garlic in large bowl with olive oil and the dried herbs. Spread them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or tin foil. Roast in oven for about 40 minutes, or until squash is tender and lightly browned. Remove from oven and place the vegetable mixture into crock pot.
Add your vegetable stock. Turn on low for 3-4 hours. When the vegetables are soft, puree the soup in a blender until smooth. You can add more vegetable stock if the soup is too thick. Stir in cream until thoroughly mixed and serve! This is soooo good.

A soup I made last night was Sweet Potato Lentils.
I was planning on making Lentils, and had a couple sweet potatoes. I'd never even heard of combining the two, but sure enough, I found a recipe for that!
I changed it a little bit to make it my own.

1 32oz container veggie broth
1.5 C water
1 (14.5oz) cans diced tomatoes
1 16oz package dried lentils, rinsed
2 sweet potatoes, cubed
2 carrots, sliced
3 stalks celery, sliced (didn't add these)
2 Tbsp cumin
1 tsp pepper
1 Tbsp cinnamon
1 Tbsp chili powder

Put everything into the slow cooker. Cook on low for 5 hours. (Depending on your crock pot)
I thought the cinnamon and chili powder was a strange combination, but wow, it was amazing!
What are some of your favorite fall soups?
