SOS Rehydrate Review and Giveaway

Recently the kind folks at Meijer sent me some SOS Rehydrate to try. I hadn't heard of it before, but after swearing off Gatorade forever, last year at the Chicago marathon, I've been open to trying new things.
They have citrus and blueberry flavor, I was sent the citrus. It's very nice and light, not overwhelming at all.
I've taken it along on several runs with me and have had no stomach problems at all with it. Yay!!

Here's a few facts:
  •  Created by a doctor and runners
  •  75% less carbs than the average sports drink
  •  No artificial sweeteners, flavors, colors or preservatives
  •  Only 25 calories per serving, 5 packets per box

You can buy it online at SOS Rehydrate, at Meijer or at these other places. Right now only $6.50 (normally $8.75).
Check out their facebook, to see what others are saying.

I have 2 boxes to giveaway, to 2 lucky people!
I'm going to make it easy for ya, all you need to do is leave a comment telling me what you use to rehydrate!

Contest ends November 3.

Urban Bourbon Half and the Singing Girl

Friday night I ran the Black Cat Chase 5k with my girl Charity. It was my slowest 5k ever (37 minutes), but I didn't push myself as hard as I could've, knowing I had a half marathon to run in the morning. Loads of fun!!

Thursday Julie and I went to pick up our packets for the Urban Bourbon half marathon. Free bourbon tasting and bourbon balls, and then the Ultimate Veggie sandwich at BBC. YUM!
Saturday morning we woke up bright and early and headed to Louisville. It was a little chilly at the start, but ended up being the perfect day for a race. The sun didn't come out at all, which was great.

This would be my first half since June, and since I just came off an injury and had been out for 6 weeks, I didn't really know what to expect. I've also been having weird pains in my knees and hip, so I just wasn't sure how I was going to feel and if I would end up doing a lot of walking.
I knew I would finish and was just going to have fun. I'm so excited to be racing again, especially since I thought I wouldn't be running again until next Spring!

Here's a little recap of my race.

Mile 1-4 Feeling great. Wondering if my new Skechers GoRun shoes were going to last for 13.1 miles, since I'd only worn them for my short runs.

Mile 5 I'm a little behind the 2:30 pacer. I think this race could be a 2:35. Take a big mouthful of GU and realize it's chunky! That is not right. Gag, and spit it out. (Yes, I made sure no one was next to me)

Mile 6 Bathroom stop. (Don't you hate that!!) Goodbye 2:30, hello 2:45 pacer.

Mile 7 Running along and just enjoying the day, when I come up to a girl singing. She was singing so loud I could hear her over my music! Ok, that's cool, I sing sometimes when I'm running too (as long as no one is around!). Here's the funny thing, she was stuck on repeat! "Don't stop till you get enough, ooh" Over and over. And over. Pass singing girl.

Mile 8 The 2:45's pass me. Sad moment.

Mile 9 Singing girl again. Same song. "Don't stop, don't stop till you get enough". I'm not kidding. Run fast.

Mile 10 Take another GU. And it's chunky too. WTH! I remember I had left these in my car over the summer, maybe they're old? I was so grossed out I don't know if I'll ever have another GU again.

Mile 11 That's right, singing girl! This time she's not singing. So I run up next to her and start chatting. She's having a hard time, she was also out for awhile because of an injury, so she wasn't prepared and she's in pain. I tell her to keep singing, and she's so close. As I run off, I hear her sing again, this time a different song. I chuckled.

Mile 12-13 I'm tired, let's get this over with. Yay, my shoes held up, my ankle doesn't hurt, my knees feel fine- I'm still in one piece!

My official time was 2:46. My slowest half was 2:47, so I was glad I beat that.

The icing on the cake was having the medal put around my neck by this sweet lady! I've read her blog for a long time, so was very excited to finally meet her. She was just as precious as I knew she would be.
After the race Julie and I stood in the LONG Bourbon line (which wasn't even moving) for about 10 minutes before deciding ok, this isn't worth it. We headed to Mellow Mushroom, my first time eating there. It was amazing.
Portobello and cheese hoagie, and an ice cold Angry Orchard

Love the bling!
I didn't see the singing girl again, but I hope she was signing as she crossed that finish line!

Do you sing while you run?
Ever had a chunky GU? (I wouldn't wish that on anyone!)

Racing again

I can't even put into words how excited I am about this weekend. I GET TO RACE AGAIN. (Sorry for yelling)

My last 5k was in August, but my last half was in June, and it did not go so well.

This fall I had 3 (yes 3) marathons scheduled. One for Sep, Oct., and Nov. But because of my injury, I've had to cancel all of them. :(

But now that my ankle is all better, I can get back to racing!

I did two runs this week. I honestly don't know what is going on with my body. I started having knee pain, which the brace helped a lot with. But now I'm having pain in BOTH knees and in my hip! This all just came on suddenly. After running 3 miles, my body feels like I ran a marathon. I can barely walk up steps, even days later. It's crazy!

Because of those things, I'm not sure how my races are going to go. But I'm just going to have fun, and be thankful that I can run again!

Friday night is the Black Cat Chase 5k. This will be my 3rd time running it. Charity and I always run it together, and it's so much fun. Not sure if I'll keep the sparkle skirt tradition going though...

2011, 2012
Saturday morning is the Urban Bourbon Half. My half PR is 2:22. Anything under that would be awesome. But again, I'm not going to be so focused on my time, although it's always in the back of my mind.
If my knees and hip keep on hurting, I may do a lot of walking. But no matter what, I WILL finish and I will be so happy. After all, my Dr didn't think I'd be running again until next Spring!!

Anyone else racing this weekend?

In a pickle

I need some technical help because...

For the past few weeks, I have been unable to comment on some of my fave blogs.
It's not only Wordpress blogs or only Blogger, I don't see any similarity in the blogs I can't comment on.

What happens is that I will comment, hit the reply button, then the page acts like it's posting, but it doesn't actually post!

I've tried everything I can think of. I will log out, log back in and try to comment again. I've tried using all of the different browsers, and then tried commenting again- still no luck.
Some blogs I reply with using my Wordpress account, so I even set up a whole new WP account- and STILL can't comment on certain blogs!

It's so weird, it just seems to be random blogs that I can't comment on. There are still some that I can comment on, no problem.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Like I said, it's only been the past few weeks.

I've also thought maybe it's just my computer, which is old and does need to be replaced!

Can anyone help a sista out??

Life lately

Hey guys!

Well, last week was my first full week at my new job, and as you can tell, I haven't yet figured out how to work full time, blog, read blogs or comment- all at the same time!
So, bear with me as I try to figure it all out. I am a patient coordinator at a Pediatric therapy office, and it is completely overwhelming! At this point I feel like I'll never learn it all.
But to compare it to my running, I remember when running 26.2 miles was completely overwhelming and seemed impossible. Ya just gotta take a day at a time, and pretty soon everything will fall into place, and you'll be able to do what once seemed impossible!

I went back to my orthopedic Dr last week and he was so excited to hear that my injury is all better! He had told me surgery was the only way to repair it. I have no doubt that prayers worked.

Yesterday I decided to go for a long run for my birthday. What better way to celebrate?! It was a beautiful, cool morning and I knew it would be perfect. My plan was at least 10 miles. didn't exactly go as planned.
Off and on for a couple weeks my knee has been hurting when I run. This time I could not even run one step without intense pain. I could walk just fine, but every time I would try to run, I just couldn't.
So my run turned into a slow, 3 mile hike. I decided to go on the trails, instead of pavement.

I'll admit, I was very discouraged and depressed. Yes, feeling sorry for myself. Pissed off. I JUST recovered from an injury, I can finally run again- and now there's something else stopping me from doing what I love to do.
I sat down by the water for awhile and just thought about life. I read once that our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but by how we react to what happens. I can choose to keep going, or just throw in the towel.
I'm not where I thought I'd be at 37 years old. I don't have what I thought I'd have. But I do have a husband and 2 stepsons who adore me. And that's more than a lot of people have.

So, I went home and enjoyed my birthday. And even got some ice cream. Dang, I don't feel 37!!!!
I'm going to do some short runs this week to see how the knee does. I'm doing the Black Cat Chase 5k race on Friday night and the Urban Bourbon half on Saturday! That'll be my first race since June!!

Any other October birthdays?
When is your next race?

Skechers Breast Cancer Awareness Shoes

Recently I was asked to participate with Skechers Performance Division shoes and their Breast Cancer awareness campaign. I was sent a pair of GoRun3 to try.

These are designed for speed with innovative performance technologies to foster a barefoot running experience while offering impact protection.
When I found out that they were minimalist shoes (4mm heel drop), for a moment I was very excited, because that's all I used to run in! But after my torn tendon, I came to the conclusion that it was probably that type of shoe that caused my injury, so I've decided not to wear minimalist anymore.
But wait... they come with custom fit insoles, that are removable, for those of us who need more cushioning!
I went on a couple 3 mile runs, and they felt perfect!

Another great thing about Skechers is that they are supporting Breast Cancer research through the American Cancer Association.
If you are looking for a comfy, cute shoe, that supports a great cause, make sure you check out the Skechers Performance Division line!

Have you tried Skechers before?

Thank you to Skechers for sponsoring this discussion.

Good news!

Hey guys!

This week I really needed something good to happen, and it did, when I received this email.
After looking for over a month, I got a job! I went on so many interviews, and was offered a couple jobs, but there was nothing that I was very excited about, or that seemed to be a good fit. When I went on this interview, it was perfect and I knew THIS was the job I wanted. So of course I was ecstatic to get the offer! I will be a patient coordinator at a pediatric therapy office, and I start Monday.

After being at home for 8 years, this is going to be a huge adjustment. Of course I'm thinking when will I have time to work out, blog and read blogs, cook, clean, do laundry, take care of the family, etc? How do you work full time, plus do all that??
I know MANY women do it, so I'll figure it out! But if you have any tips for me, do share!

This is probably crazy, but I got my first foam roller this week!
I probably never would've bought one, (crazy, I know) but I won this Valeo roller from Active. So I tried it for the first time after a 5 mile run and OUCH! It was very awkward and painful! How in the world are you supposed to balance on this thing? I'm glad no one was around, it was quite comical!
My IG and FB friends said to just keep doing it, and it gets better. They say it's a good kind of pain!
I'll be going for a long run tomorrow, so will give it another try after that.

Do you foam roll after a run?
What are your weekend plans?

Back at the beginning. Again.

I haven't put this out there before because I guess I've been in denial.
I'm not in denial anymore.
I have gained back all but 5 lbs of the weight I lost last year.

This was me, exactly one year ago at the Chicago marathon.

I had lost 30 lbs., and for the first time in many years, I felt SO good. I was confidant, all of my clothes fit, I could even see a hint of abs, that used to be covered in fat. My running was going great, I felt light and my pace was getting quicker.
I was constantly telling myself  "do NOT gain the weight back. Keep going, you're doing so good, only 20 more lbs.", etc.
The compliments were very nice too. It's nice to always hear "you're getting so skinny, everytime I see you, you've lost more weight", and so on.

Now I'm back to where I started. How?
Well, life as I knew it came crashing down- of my own doing. My husband and I started marriage counseling at the beginning of the year, we went through a lot of things with my stepson, life just became pretty dang miserable. So ever since January, I've just put on a couple pounds a month, until now, I've gained it all back.

I'm not going to post a pic of what I really look like now, because it's just embarrassing.  It's been easy to hide the weight gain in pics by just covering up or even the angle of the camera. But I know the truth.

So, here we go again! I hate the term "getting back on the wagon", because I'm not doing that. I'm just getting back to eating healthy and small portions and WAY less ice cream.

Now instead of 20 lbs left, I once again have 50. But I've done it before, so I know I can do it. I will do it.
My life may still be in shambles, I'm still drowning in a sea of uncertainty, and see no land in sight.
But this I can control. This I can do.

I feel like I should apologize for letting anyone down. I know in a way, I feel let down when I was so encouraged by someone's weight loss, only to find out they gained it all back.

We all have our own struggles, don't we?

I'm going to update weekly on my weight loss, I need that accountability. So if you're just going to roll your eyes, you might not want to read that day. :)

Now I'm off to run 10 miles...

Have you ever had to start over?

Oh Chicago

On Saturday I met Michelle, from 3 Cheap Runners in Chicago and we got to spend the weekend together. I met her a year ago at the Chicago Marathon, but we didn't have much of a chance to talk then. We've kept in touch throughout the year, and made plans to meet up in Chicago this weekend!

After a very stressful drive into Chicago (I thought driving in downtown Louisville was stressful, but it doesn't even compare!!) I met Michelle at the hotel and we walked over to a Mexican restaurant for marg's. It was so good and MUCH needed!
After relaxing for awhile we walked around downtown, went into a few stores, and then went to Weber Grill for our dinner reservation. If you're ever in Chicago, go there!! It was delicious. (Make a reservation though, otherwise you'll have a long wait)
Parmesan crusted tilapia
After dinner we were planning on going to The Great Chicago Fire Festival. We walked down to the river, but it was PACKED. We crossed the bridge, trying to find a place where we could see, and could hardly even get across the bridge because of all the people. So, we decided to just head on back to the room. That ended up being a good decision, we we were tired, and later heard the festival was a bust anyway!

Sunday morning we walked down to the Navy Pier. It was awesome seeing everything 'in person', instead of only in pictures!
We rode the ferris wheel, which was AMAZING! It was a little scary at the top though...

What a view!

We saw LOTS of runners out. Probably most of whom will be running the marathon next weekend. I gotta say, it made me really wish I was running it! Maybe next year...

And of course we ended the trip with Pinkberry. It was heaven. Seriously.

I LOVE Chicago! This was my first time really getting to see the city. Of course I ran through it last year for the marathon, but I was so sick and miserable that I didn't even look around or enjoy it. Then I left when the race was over, so didn't do any sight seeing.

I can't wait to go back! Although next time I think I'll fly, rather than drive. ;)
And hanging out with Michelle was a blast. Getting to spend time with her confirmed what I already knew, she is a precious, sweet girl, who is an incredible friend. I wish Canada wasn't so far from Kentucky. Can't wait to plan our next adventure!

Have you been to Chicago?
Did you run or race this weekend?

5 Things Friday

Happy Friday and Happy October! (I know, we're already 3 days in.)
Today I'm linking up with Clare for 5 Things Friday!
1. This Banana Bread. I've made quite a bit of banana bread in my life, but I have now found my new fave recipe. It's so simple too! Seriously delicious.

2. One of my runs this week. I promise I won't talk about every single run I go on. I'm just so happy to be running again, and I can't stop myself from talking about it!

3. I am still unemployed. I could get used to this! Actually, no I couldn't. It sucks not being able to sign up for any races or being able to buy all the cute clothes and shoes.
I had a few interviews this week, and I'm 99% sure one of them is a sure thing. I'll know early next week, I am hoping this is it! Hopefully I am done with interviews. I think I could do them in my sleep now.

4. One thing I love about Fall is birthdays! As you know, I have a huge family, and 8 out of all 11 of us (including parents) have Fall birthdays. (Mine is in 15 days!! Please stop time!)
We like to do birthdays big in our fam.
Handsome brother
 My gorgeous oldest sis

5. And what I've been looking forward to most this week...
Visiting this pretty city with this pretty lady! I was in Chicago last year for the marathon and met Michelle then. Over the year we've kept in touch and our friendship has grown and I'm so excited about hanging out with her again this weekend!

Tell me a highlight (or two) from your week!
