The race that didn't happen

Well, Saturday was supposed to be half marathon #7. It was the Run the Bluegrass half, in Lexington.
I had been sick all week, but I thought all I had was a cold. Friday morning I woke up SICK and miserable. Julie and I had already been planning on going to the expo that night and then out to eat. 
The expo was great! After that we headed to Porcini's, and got the best pizza I've ever had in my life. It had sliced potato's on it, which I'd never even heard of. It was amazing!

  I was still determined to run the next morning though, no matter how I was feeling. The weather didn't look good at all though. There was a 90% chance of rain and it was going to be cold. 

 Saturday morning my alarm goes off at 5:30. I had not slept good and felt even worse than I did Friday. I think I had a small fever too. After a lot of back and forth with Julie (I couldn't decide what to do!), I decided to just stay home. Oh, that was such a crushing feeling! I had so been looking forward to this race. Looking forward to the beautiful medal, looking forward to running with my friends, and then meeting some new friends.

  If I knew the weather was going to be warm and sunny, I probably would've done it anyway. But since I'm leaving for vacay on Monday, I knew I needed to be getting better, not worse.

 I went back to bed for a couple hours, and then to the Dr. Found out I have a sinus infection and bronchitis. So I know I made the right decision on staying home. I have a full marathon in 2 weeks that I need to be ready for. And I will do this race next year!
As my wise friend Julie says, "as much as we want to, we can't do it all..." Life goes on!

This morning I'll be driving to Hilton Head with my girl, Charity! A week at the beach is exactly what I need.

5 Things Friday!

Happy Friday!

 I'm linking up with Clare for today's post.

 1. I've had a glorious week alone! My fam is at Disney World with my husband's dad. I was not invited, but that's quite alright with me, I love being alone. Last night I went out with my adorable and sweet Mother in Law.
After dinner we went to my fave store. On Monday I'm going to Hilton Head for the week with Charity, and I desperately needed some shorts and a swimming suit. I detest trying clothes on. Ugh, it's so depressing. I've gained 10 lbs., and I can sure tell. :(
I have to share this funny moment. My MIL was looking at some pics on my phone, and I totally forgot that I had a ummm...how do I say this...'private' pic on there. Well, she saw it. Awkward!!!! All I could say was "oops, sorry!"

2. Charley knows where to get food from! And my sweet Bailey Boo loves to share hers!

3. So, I've been sick all week. I haven't been to the dr, but I think it's a sinus infection. I've been through a million of these kleenex, and they are amazing! They really are cool, and feel oh so good on a very sore nose!
4. Y'all know I love making jam. These are my latest, Lemon Blueberry Jam. When I used to sell jams, these were everyone's favorite. I'd be glad to share!!

5. Tomorrow will be half marathon #7!! I'll be doing the Run the Bluegrass, in Lexington. It's a beautiful course, going through many thoroughbred horse farms. It is known for it's hills though! I did it last year and it is super hilly. Last year my time was 2:34, so I'm just hoping to beat that this year!
 Tonight the lovely Jules and I will be going to the expo to pick up our packets. I have so many friends running this race, and I can't wait to meet them all!
 Of course the weather will be horrible though. It'll be in the 30's, with a 90% chance of rain!! Oh well, it is what it is.

 I'd rather just buy them, and try them on at home, and then return them if they don't fit. Weird, I know!

Packing for a 50 mile run

 I am certainly no expert on this, but these are some of things I brought along, and what worked for me.




I got ginger chews and blister protectors from zombierunner.com. This site has everything you can imagine, related to running! I'm so glad I found it. I didn't use any ginger chews, thankfully I didn't have any stomach issues. I'll still bring them for my 100, just in case though, I've heard they work wonders!
 I did use the blister protectors, but because of all the water and snow, they didn't stay in place. When I got home and saw that I had blisters on the bottoms of my feet, I decided to put some of the protectors on at that time, and I was able to walk much easier.
Handwarmers were awesome!! I got them for only .75 at Kroger. They lasted about 8 hours, even after falling through the ice into the freezing water!

Ibuprofin (even though Dan called me a cheater for taking some! Hey, whatever it takes.)
Vaseline (didn't use, but just in case)
Chapstick (I was very grateful for this, I know the wind would've chapped my lips bad)
Toilet paper (Not needed because there were a lot of bathroom/port a pottie things on the trail)

Bandaids
Headlamp

3 extra pairs of socks
2 jugs of water

I used my Hoorag for the first time! I was SO happy to have it, and I loved it. And how cute is it!!
SO many ways to wear it!
I wore it around my neck and whenever the wind would get going, or I was just feeling cold (which was most of the day), I would pull it up over my mouth and nose. It was awesome. It's thin enough to breathe through, but also kept me warm. I'm pretty sure Dan was embarrassed to be seen with me, but heck, I was warm! :) They have so many cute styles and patterns too. I'm thinking a giveaway might be in your future...


I now have 2 pairs of trail running shoes. Adidas Thrasher TR 2 and Hi-Tec total terrain aero shoes.

I had one pair, and ordered the 2nd pair, but of course they didn't arrive until after I got home! So I wore the same pair during the whole run, something that definitely contributed to my blisters!

 You know how I like doing things the hard way, right? Well, I bought a hydration pack, and for some reason didn't test it out at home first. What was I thinking? See, do as I SAY, not as I DO!!
 We get to the park, I fill it up with water- and nothing happens. I can't get the water to come out of the tube! I was cold and didn't feel like messing with it, trying to get it to work. So I ended up carrying a water bottle with me, for 11 hours. That was very annoying!!
 Once I got back home I figured out that you have to cut open the valve so the water can come out.
 One of these days I'll learn to try things first, before waiting until it's too late!


Hydration and Fuel:
I drank mostly water. Dan brought some Gatorade, so I had a few sips of that. My stomach does not like Gatorade, so I made sure not to drink too much.
I brought about 10 GU's with me. But... I left them all in the car. Oh, I worry myself sometimes!

Dan carried a backpack and had some peanut m&m's and some chex mix. I also made some PB & J's for us, so we ate those as well.
 I know I didn't eat enough the whole day. I ate very, very little. Honestly, I was never hungry at all. Which is not a good excuse. I know that's why I almost passed out once I got home. Lesson learned!!

So, I learned quite a bit, and I know I'll be better prepared for my 100 in 4.5 weeks!

My legs are still a little sore today, but I just need to go for a run, which I will do today! My feet are all better and blisters are gone.
 I actually woke up sick on Saturday morning, but felt fine all day long. Then Sunday it all came back with a vengeance. I'm still trying to get over it. (Headache, cough and sinus stuff)

35 mile snowy, icy, muddy run!

Well, actually it wasn't a run at all!
Saturday Dan and I went to Chain O Lakes campground, in Indiana, to run the same trail that we'll be running for our 100 mile race in April. We had no idea what we were in for! Our plan was to do the 16 mile loop 3 times. We got started at 10 a.m., that way we would also get some night running in .

It was COLD. The temp was in the low 30's.
 Once we got on the trails, we discovered they were covered with at least 8" of snow in most places. That is no exaggeration either! They were not marked very well at all, and even with our map, we got off the trail a few times because you couldn't even see it! After going over 3 miles in the wrong direction, we found where we should've started.
 So, now we're going in the right direction. We're on the IT 100 trail.

Still trudging through tons of snow. I would say about 90% of it was snow covered. What wasn't covered in snow was a few inches of mud, water crossings and ice. Fun times!!

Of course my phone died before we even began, so I didn't get to take any pictures. Dan took a few.

At one point we were going over a water crossing that had frozen over. Dan is skinny, so had no problem walking across. Me, not so much. I fell right through the ice. It was deep water too! I lost my balance and fell in up to my knees. This tells ya what a great guy he is, he walked back across the ice and pulled me out, falling through the ice himself. Just picture that.
  Through all of this I could not stop laughing!! It was so miserable and funny at the same time!
You can imagine how cold that water was. It was absolutely shocking. Once we both got out, we stopped and changed into dry socks. My toes were totally numb. It felt like I was walking on sticks, I couldn't even feel my feet!


 We had agreed ahead of time that we would take turns being the cheerleader. Poor Dan had to be the cheerleader the whole time. So many times I said this is it!! It's impossible! I was never mad, I seriously laughed all day long. I just knew this could not be done!
 He told me several times I chose the wrong person to do this with. Because he does NOT give up. As much as I hated it at the moment, I knew I chose the right person though. He's been through a lot at 18 years old, so I knew he would be tough mentally and was exactly what I needed!



So we kept on. 20 miles of that stuff. It was CRAZY!!
We get back to the car after that and fill up on more drinks and food, and head out again. That was torture. It was the hardest thing I've ever done. I mean, I just felt so overwhelmed. I shed a few tears, screamed a few times, and kept walking. (We didn't see even 1 other person all day long!) Dan said a few times I was scaring him. Haha! Poor guy!
 My legs and body actually felt fine, but my mind just couldn't go on. I couldn't put myself through anymore of this.
 And Dan said that's exactly where I needed to be. That's when the true test starts. That's when you push yourself and find out how strong you are. That's what will get me through 100 miles. Pushing past the point of breaking down. As he said a hundred times, you just keep putting one foot in front of the other.


 And believe it or not, it got better! It seemed to actually warm up (although I'm sure it didn't really), and we decided to stay on the roads for the rest of it.
 So we did 15 more miles. A mistake I made was not putting my running shoes on for the roads. Wearing trail shoes on pavement is painful!
 Our last hour was done in the dark, which was fun! We forgot to get batteries for Dan's headlamp, so he just wore mine and we stayed right together. That worked out fine.
 The last hour was very hard because it felt like I was walking on spikes. The bottoms of my feet felt raw and bloody, although they weren't. But my legs felt great!



Finally, after 11 hours, we get back to the car. I just wanted to kiss my car, I was so happy to see it!! 



We stayed the weekend with my Aunt, Uncle and cousins, so we headed back to their house.
Once I got out of the car and into the house, I started shaking and my teeth were chattering so bad. I didn't feel cold though, so it was strange. I decided to take a shower before eating anything- another mistake! I almost passed out a few times. I know I didn't eat enough throughout the day. A mistake I won't make again.

 Today my legs are a little sore, but not too bad. I got blisters on the bottom of both feet, probably from being wet and cold for 11 hours. And wearing trail shoes on the pavement. 



 I am disappointed it didn't go as planned. I have no doubt that if the trails had been clear, we definitely would've done 50 miles. I can tell you, after all that, it felt like we ran 100 miles. 

 And I did get to break 2 of my previous records; my farthest distance to this point was only 26.2, and the most hours on my feet was 6. I am proud to have broken both of those!

I was seriously doubting my ability to run 100 in 5 weeks from now. I was trying to convince Dan to switch to the 50, but of course he wouldn't listen. He says we can do it and he'll be DANGED if we DNF. If we can do 35 miles of this stuff, we can do anything. So I believe him. We're gonna do it. And I can't wait!!

 Tomorrow I'll share what I ate and drank, and what I brought with me, and other tidbits I learned along the way.

I think I'll run 50 miles tomorrow

Happy Friday!

 This evening Dan (my running buddy) and I will be leaving for Indiana, and tomorrow we'll be running 50 miles on the same course where we'll be running 100 in a few more weeks! I have relatives who live near the course, so will be staying with them for the weekend.

  I can say, packing for a 50 mile race is so different from packing for a half or full! Especially since this isn't an actual race, it's just a training run. So I'll be bringing my own nutrition, drinks, and everything else!
This is just a few things
One thing I am nervous about is the weather. It's supposed to be a high of 42, and a low of 24. As you guys know, I HATE the cold. I'd rather run 20 miles inside on my treadmill, than 1 mile outside in the cold. So that'll be a challenge. 
 There has also been some flood warnings in Albion (where Chain O Lakes is), so I'm worried the course might be flooded. Guess we'll find out!
 Our plan is to start at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. We want to get a later start so that we can run a few hours at night as well. It might be pushing it to finish by 10 p.m., but that's the goal!
We'll be running this 16 mile loop 3 times. 

I'm nervous. But I'm also so excited! I've read everything I can possibly find on ultra's. 50 milers and 100's. My brain is stuffed with info on what to do, what not to do, what to eat and not eat. My brain is on overload. But I do feel like I'm ready.

When I get back I'll share everything I know, and what worked for me. 

Now I'm off to finish packing. Let's hope I don't forget anything!!!

RJ Corman 10 mile Race Recap

This weekend I ran the RJ Corman 10 mile race. Saturday was the perfect day for it! I couldn't have asked for a better day. It would've been completely perfect if... my music would've worked. Yes, again. 

 I'm standing at the start line, turn on my ipod, and NOTHING. I turn it on and off a few times, still NOTHING. It's dead. Oh. My. Gosh. I had charged this stupid thing all night long! And it's dead! Now I have to run 10 miles with NOTHING. You'd think I would've learned by now to test my electronics before I leave home, but no. I like to learn things the hard way.
 So, I ran 10 miles without music. And I didn't die.
Not sure what's going on here, but something was funny.

The race was at RJ Corman, a railroad company. It was a beautiful course, a lot of it was right along the railroad. I got to run about 4 miles of it with Sarah and Kei. It was great having someone to chat with for part of it!
 Running along the runway was the most difficult part for me. You go from running on a gorgeous course, with little streams and trains, to a LONG, boring runway. I know if I'd had my music, it wouldn't have been nearly as bad.

When I first saw this lady, of course I had to look twice.
I saw her out of the corner of my eye, and thought "oh no, her pants are falling down!!"

I was hoping to finish in 1:45, but as long as it was under 2, I would be happy. My time was 1:54.

One other thing I forgot, was to bring my GU's! I actually brought 2 with me, but left them in the car. I definitely could tell I was missing them as I was running.
 This was an excellent race. The aid stations had Sword hydration and water. One of the aid stations had volunteers from the kids local soccer team. They were AWESOME! They were all so encouraging and cheering us on.
 At the finish line they had chicken from Zaxby's. I can never eat right after a race, so I had to skip that yumminess. They also had homemade churned ice cream. You KNOW I can eat ice cream at any time though!

I might've gone back for seconds too....hey, it's an addiction, I can't help it!

After the race Amy and I went to Copper River Grill. It was great catching up on life with her. She is super fast and got a PR!
This is a race I will definitely be running again!

A long run and 100 mile planning

Sorry I'm just now getting around to writing about Saturday's long run. Life is a little crazy!

I only had 18 miles on the schedule, but my goal was to do 30. I ate a pb&j sandwich, and headed out bright and early. The weather was absolutely perfect.
I had a great run. Even when someone let their huge, muddy dog jump on me. (And I was wearing a white skirt.) Well, that was a little annoying.

 My ipod died at mile 10 (what is the deal with my electronics always dying on me?!), so that was very disheartening. I didn't know how I could possibly get through 20 more miles with no music!! But I just told myself it was mental training for my 100 miler. And it honestly wasn't too bad at all!
 My darling friend, Louisa, was texting me, encouraging me through the whole run. She gave me some hilarious tips on how to run without music. ;)


 Since it's not enough that 1 electronic die, around mile 20 my Garmin AND my phone died. I was expecting that from my Garmin, because the battery only lasts 5 hours. I guess I should've expected that from my phone too.
 So at that point I had no music, no watch and no phone. That means no way to track my next 10 miles. 

I decided to just go home and run the rest on my treadmill.

I can tell such a huge difference when I wear these on my long runs.
 I ended up running a total of 25 miles. My pace for the 20 miles was pretty slow, but I walked up a couple really big hills a few times. I'm not as focused on my pace right now, since for the 100 miles, I'll be doing lots of walking. They say in training you need to do a lot of walking too, since that uses different muscles than running. You just need to do a good mixture of both! 

 Last night Dan (my 100 mile running buddy) came over to figure out our plan. I can't believe it's less than 7 weeks away! And we'll be running 50 miles in 2 weeks! It's getting so real now.
 We made a pact that the only thing that would stop us from finishing is if we broke BOTH of our legs. Break one leg? Keep going.
 Dan is a hilarious kid, I have no doubt he'll keep me laughing the whole time too.

5 Things Friday

Happy Friday!
 I'm linking up with Clare, for today's 5 things.

1. I am back in my running groove! I was only out of it for a week, but I think the break did my mind and body some good. I've ran 3 days this week, I'll be running again today, and tomorrow will be my long run. My plan is to do 30 miles. It's going to be 57 and sunny. A perfect day to run for hours and hours and hours!

2. A much needed girls night happened last night. There's nothing like talking and laughing with sweet friends over margarita's and Mexican!

3. I felt like jammin this week. Strawberry jam! I used to make and sell about 15 flavors of jams (to raise funds for our adoption that never happened). I still love doing it, but now I just give them away.
4. My momma. She is so amazing. Although I usually see her once a week, we don't often get a chance to talk alone, so she came to see me yesterday, bringing gifts. Coffee. Yes.
 She has always been my biggest supporter, and she still is. You know when your mom tells you everything is gonna be ok, you just have to believe her. She cries with me and gives the best advice ever. I adore her. I hope to someday have my own child and be just as wonderful to her as my Mom is to me. ♥
This is 7 years old, but it's the only one I have of us together!
5. Well... I guess this should be 4 things Friday, because that's all I got!

You keep on going

We got hit by the snow and ice AGAIN. It is currently 15 degrees. It could be worse though. Where my sister lives, in WI, it's -2.  There's always something to be thankful for!
This is how I'm feeling today.
Saturday night I went out with this pretty lady. It was a much needed girls night out! We went shopping and  to dinner at Saul Good, in Lexington. Staying out until 2 a.m. with her was worth every minute of sleep I lost!

Want to know how many miles I ran last week? 0. Yes, you read that right. I did not run ONE time last week. I haven't done that in months!! That's not so impressive for someone who will be running 100 miles in less than 2 months. 

 I've been going through a lot in my personal life for several months, and last week had something else happen that just felt like a punch in the stomach. Honestly, it knocked me off my feet. Made me start questioning myself and my dreams.
 I love running. There's not much else that makes me as happy. So when I realized I hadn't ran even 1 mile all week, I had to give myself a pep talk. (Am I the only crazy one who does this?)

 Yes, I fell. That's ok, and that's to be expected. It happens to all of us. It's what you do afterwards that matters. Are you going to stay down and be defeated and crushed or will you dust yourself off, stand back up and keep going, even stronger than before. That's what I'm going to do!

Nothing will stop me from being who I am, and going for what I want.

I've often heard the saying "Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God". That seems kind of cheesy, until it applies to your life. I don't know what is in my future. But I have to trust that God knows. I have to believe that He has plans to give me hope and a future. When you don't know how to face another day, know that His mercies are new every morning. He says come to Him, all who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and He will give you rest.

  Sorry that this is deep, raw and real. It's just where I am right now.


Onward and upward!! Now I'm going for a run!
