A new gym and a new baby!!

This morning I got the text that I had been waiting for, my beautiful sister and her hubby were on their way to the hospital to have her first baby!
Then I waited and waited ALL day long to hear that he was finally here! I don't know any details at this time, but poor girl, she was in labor for hours!! He's almost 9 lbs., and 21 inches. His mom and dad are very tall (as is everyone in my fam), so we knew he would be too.
Thankfully, Mommy and sweet baby are doing great. I believe I'll be making a little trip back to KY next week to see him.
My new nephew, Xavier
I told you guys I was going to find a gym while I was here, and I did!
I haven't been to a gym in years. It was so nice to be back! My first day I spent 3 hours, then today I was there for almost 3 hours.
When I leave, I'm always surprised it has been that long. Time flys when you're having fun!

This gym is so nice. They have lots of equipment, so many different fitness classes, including spin (yay!), they even have free tanning beds! It's going to be hard to leave this place at the end of the month.
Love the rower!
As I've mentioned before, I've been having pain in my knee when I run. Well, it's still there. I've been running 5 miles a day, and wore my knee brace for today's run, but it really didn't seem to help. I can't figure out if it's runners knee or an IT band. I have similar symptoms for both of them.

And...I spur of the moment decided to sign up for a half marathon on Saturday, in Lebanon (just outside of Nashville). It was only $20, I couldn't resist. There is no mention of medal's, I hope a medal is included!
But I'm not above walking it if the pain gets bad. Although that would really suck!

Sorry for the hot mess picture, but I love the sign in the gym locker room. I think it was put there just for me.

Are you a member of a gym?
How do you feel about tanning beds?
I haven't used one in years. If I do tan, I cover up my face, neck and chest. No leather skin for me!

  1. Congrats to your sister on the birth of the baby! I don't participate in runs but my 16 yoa son is very actively involved in them.
I don't go tanning but I think I'd sure take up the opportunity for the free tanning beds in the gym!

  3. No, I don't have a gym membership. I did use a tanning bed for a month or so (something I'd won years ago).

  4. Congrats on the birth of your nephew! He's beautiful! And congrats on joining a gym. As a personal trainer, I definitely think strength training will be a great compliment to running, or any other sport you plan on doing. And with most knee injuries, they can be traced back to weaknesses in the glutes. So strengthen that butt ;) I'd be happy to answer questions, just get in touch! Good luck at the race this weekend!

    1. Thank you! I've known for awhile that I need to get back to strength training. I'll definitely work on the glutes too!

  5. I've never used a tanning bed, and I was always the pale one on spring breaks. I'm beyond white but my dermatologist is happy about that.

    1. Good for you! I've never used them much, I would usually get out in the sun all I could. But not anymore! I'm very careful now about wearing an spf if I'm going to be out in it.

  8. Congrats to you and your family! I go to a gym that's about a mile from my house. I actually don't use the machines there a lot, I mostly go to run on the track when there are 16 inches of snow on the ground -- like now! :--) I have been focusing more on my running lately but last year I worked with a trainer for a few sessions and he gave me some great ideas that I want to get back to doing soon. Good luck at your half!

  9. 9lbs…. Holy Smokes the babies these days…. Congrats Aunt Ice Cream 2 Marathon!!! I am very fortunate to have found a program at our local gym that allows me a free membership. Its a work trade program that was geared towards the Silver Sneakers Group which makes me the youngest by far. I only clean the Airport location 3 hrs a MONTH and the Downtown location 2 hrs a MONTH. A huge savings for me and I simple sanitize the equipment. I am so lucky and like I mentioned before, VERY FORTUNATE!!! Now, I agree with RUN WITH SOLE, weak gluts can cause runners knee. If you were in Colorado I would work with you on a number of levels. I completely believe in Ortho-Bionomy and have seen first hand how rebooting the nervous system helps runners and cyclist rebound from " it just bothers me" type of injuries. Just ask, I can give you a number of scenarios. Speaking of nerves…… Tanning beds literally burn out the nerve ends near the skin. ( To be specific, tanning beds eat away the myelin sheath around the axon of a neuron ) I kid you not!!! Over time, the nerves will began to "shut" off and refer pain as if you had shingles. Tanning beds are horrible and I ask nicely ," Please reframe from going down that path." Again, please ask me questions as I have my residential in March and if I don't know the answer to your question, I will ask it. Take care, use your foam roller, and stay strong.

    1. Ah, you are so full of useful info!! I wish I was in CO, I could use your help! Wow, your gym situation sounds ideal! I would definitely do that for a free membership. I have never even heard of Ortho-Bionomy. Is that something I should look into? I know tanning beds are horrible. I KNOW!! I actually was kind of surprised that a gym, where people go to become or stay healthy, would have a tanning bed, which everyone knows is bad for you. I've only been once...I'll try to refrain, I promise. Thanks Mr Padre, I know who to go to with questions!

  10. Congrats on the new niece, you must be so excited. It's great that you can meet her so soon after she's arrived. I feel like my yoga classes always fly by. They're usually 75 minutes, but most of the time class is over in what feels like 10 minutes.

  11. Congratulations on a new niece!! My first nephew (my first time being an aunt in general) is due next month and I am soo excited!
I can't do tanning beds anymore. I used to use them all of the time but now I figure it can't be worth all of the risk. If I do have to go for a wedding or something, I always opt for spray tan now.

    1. Being an Aunt is lots of fun. With this new nephew, I am now an Aunt of 6! I love it. I've done the spray tan before, I just recently found a self tanning lotion that I like, so I'll be using that in the summer. The beds are so convenient, but I know they're not worth it!

  13. Congratulations on the new baby nephew!! Okay .. keeping on the creepy/weird trend .. our husbands are both named Jeremy/Jeramie .. and I too have a nephew named Xavier!!!! SO. WEIRD. You don't have a brother named Mike do you? I do have a gym membership that we pay a ridiculous amount for, but we love it. When is your first spin class? I love the classes at my gym the most. Although when I'm not training so intensely I would like to take more advantage of the weights and things.

  14. Congrats on the arrival of your nephew! So exciting! I do belong to a gym. And it has great childcare which is awesome. As for tanning beds. I went in them every winter when I was in highschool, college and into my 20's until my mom was diagnosed with melanoma. No more sun for me!

    1. Thanks Sue! It is exciting. I can't wait to go see him! How scary about your mom! Now that I'm older I do try to stay out of the sun and haven't done tanning beds in years. But since this one is free, I'm finding it hard to resist!

  15. Congrats on the new baby in the family! Also, good luck on your half this weekend! I really hope you're able to get a medal because that totally makes my day at the finish line after a long race! I actually sometimes sign up for races based on if they give out medals or not! I'm kind of addicted to getting them now! http://www.acoupleofdashes.com

  16. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! No tanning beds!!! They have wrecked my skin. I used to go EVERY DAY when I was young & my skin is all sorts of spotted now because of them. My hands are even aged because of it. NO NO NO NO NO NO!!! #becauseIcare
Yippee for a sweet new nephew!!!
My knee is flared up again too. The hubs just said I probably will have it life long... that just ticks me off.

  17. Three hours at the gym? That is a marathon session :) But I totes get it - sometimes I end up spending close to that long at my gym because of all the fun classes. It's like social hour for adults.

Best of luck at the upcoming half marathon. Sometimes it's fun to do a spur of the moment race!

  19. I worked at a curves when they first showed up like 12 years ago but, that's the closest I've come to joining a gym. As for tanning I've never been in a bed,I've actually never tried to tan at all. If I were going to tan I think I would try self tanning products first beds are a bit scary. Congrats on the new nephew, and good luck on the half marathon!

I am a member of an awesome gym. I love it and use it a lot, too. 3 hours. Wow. No tanning for me. Not since my high school days in New Jersey!

  21. I have a member at Planet Fitness, but I should probably cancel it. It's so much easier for me to workout at home. I'm currently waiting for the new 21 Day Fix Extreme program to arrive, and I couldn't be more excited. I used the original 21 Day Fix to lose 65 pounds last year. I love your story. I'm pretty new to running, but I definitely want a marathon to be in my future. I'm excited to follow your blog and pick up some tips. :)

    1. I do love to workout at home too. Lately I just haven't had the motivation though. I think I'm just burned out on home workouts, I've got them all! Actually joining a gym has motivated me again though. I saw the commercial on your blog for the 21 day fix extreme, that looks awesome. I never did the original one, but I heard a lot of good things about it. 65 lbs is amazing!! Awesome job! I hope there will be a marathon in your future. They are hard, but the rewards are so so worth it.

  24. Love your rail runner shirt! (We are in Lexington and that race is right around the corner, also saw that RTB is in your near future - hello hills!) MB's a member of far too many gyms! LA Fitness for all the time treadmill availability and the pool . . . FIT for group fitness classes like PiYo and weights and SwimBikeRun for cycling on the computrainer. ACK! And considering a master swim membership. This is getting crazy! (Triathloning gets crazy.)
No way no how am I going to a tanning bed. I just don't get it. I'm super pale and that's just the way it is!

  25. Your new gym looks like it has a pretty lovely view! It's been about a year since I was a member of a gym, but I do miss it. The focus I feel when leaving my outside environment and going to the gym is way better than when I try to exercise anywhere else.

  26. Congrats Auntie! He's adorable. The new gym looks sweet. Not a huge fan of tanning beds anymore but 15 years ago I was. Uggg I was addicted. I know it was so bad. I'm so good at covering up now but maybe a little too good as my vitamin D levels were horribly low! My doctor suggested a little sunshine as my levels barely even registerd on my last blood test. I'm taking a supplement and really trying to spend a few minutes in a tank or tee shirt daily. Thankfully I live in Arizona so sun really isn't an issue.

I think it's awesome you're on this trip, that sign is absolutely perfect too and so true!!!!
I am not a fake bake person, I have been twice, years ago. Both times I walked out feeling like I smelt like burnt flesh and the smell seemed to linger for days, even though no one else could smell it, LOL But ya, I think it's smart to cover the face and neck! I do that even in the regular sun, helps us age slower, LOL

I'm a member of a gym and a tennis club and I also go to a Pilates studio. I'm having a tough time justifying my gym membership in light of the tennis club membership and Pilates fees. I'm trying to decide which one to give up!
