KY Derby Mini Marathon rainy recap

This weekend I ran half #12, the KY Derby half marathon. Even though I live in KY, this was my first time running it, and I already know I will do this every year from now on. It was awesome.

Friday was a beautiful, sunny day, and Sunday was going to be the same. Saturday- not so much. There was a 100% chance of rain all day. The good thing is the temps would be in the 50's. I don't mind rain, I just don't want to be cold!

I met Erin at 6:30 Saturday morning and we headed to the race. It was overcast, but not yet raining.
The race started at 7:30, and the rain started around 7:45.
For at least half of the race it was just a steady drizzle, not real hard. Then I think it was around mile 9, the rain started coming down fast, and it didn't stop. It was crazy!
I was very glad I wore a rain jacket and a hat. I made the mistake of not wearing a hat once during a race in the rain, and I could hardly see because of the makeup in my eyes. Never again!

My absolute favorite part of the race was running through Churchill Downs. I've only seen pictures or watched the derby on tv, I hadn't seen it in person. It was incredible.
(Obviously not my pic, because the sun is shining.
I'm sorry, I don't remember where I got it, but thanks to whoever took it!)
I'd always heard that this race has good crowd support, and that was so true. Even in the pouring rain, there were so many people out cheering us on. The volunteers were awesome too!

Every race I always hope for a PR, which would be 2:24. But I knew if that didn't happen, I wanted to beat my time from last weekend's half, which was 2:37.

I felt so good during the race. No knee pain, no other aches, I just felt great. I was running almost the whole time, which made me so happy. I usually do a lot of walking, especially towards the end, but I could just tell that I was getting stronger and didn't need to walk as often. I was so happy!! Yes, even in the pouring rain, I was having a blast.

I get to the finish line, and see that I beat last weeks time by 4 minutes, it was 2:33. Yay!!!

After the race I got to meet up with my love, Kimberly, again. She ran a full last weekend, a half this weekend, and next weekend she's doing the Flying Pig. She's amazing!!

I felt so good! This was a time I thought, "Ok, I could've ran the full..." Maybe next year. :)
I am SO happy to report that I got no chaffing, no blisters, no nothin'! Just a perfect race, even in the rain.

I also have to give a shout out to the amazing Rennay. She was standing out in the rain cheering us on at mile 8. Seeing a familiar face and hearing my name was just what I needed. Thank you girl!!

Going cold turkey

Because of the name of my blog, it's pretty obvious that I love ice cream.
Not just love it, but LOVE it.

Many, many years ago I would eat ice cream for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Seriously. That is it.
I would buy a tub of Blue Bell, and eat nothing else. Horrific, isn't it? But that's been years ago. Years.

(Thank God for running!)

So, when I got this email from BB a few days ago, I was quite saddened!

Noooo! The only ice cream I ever buy is being taken off the shelves!
I know it's only temporary, but how will I ever survive?

Ok, I'm only joking. I'm not that obsessed.

Then I started thinking, this could be a blessing in disguise. What better way to break an addiction, then go cold turkey.
So that's what I'm doing. I don't know when it'll be back on the shelves, but maybe by that time I will have lost so much weight from not eating it, that my craving will be gone.

Tomorrow I'll be running half  #12, the KY Derby Mini. This will be my first time running back to back half's. (2 weekends in a row)
The weather will be interesting...100% chance of showers and thunderstorms, some severe. Bring it on!

Have a lovely weekend, my friends!

Have you ever had to quit something cold turkey?

Carmel Half Marathon Recap

Saturday I ran the Carmel half Marathon. As most of you know, I had planned on running the marathon, but decided to switch to the half instead. I knew mentally and physically, I just wasn't ready for another full.
I got to Carmel, IN Friday afternoon, and started  seeing signs for "Mile 18", "Mile 23", and then I recognized the course from where I've ran the full the last 2 years. It did make me sad. I started to doubt my decision. But it was too late, so I didn't think about it too long, I just got excited about running!

I stayed the weekend with a friend of mine who lives near Carmel, so it was nice having someone to go out to eat and hang out with. She's not a runner, so I tried my best to contain my excitement and pre-race jitters, and not talk incessantly about running to her. :)

Saturday morning when I got to the race, I realized I had forgotten my GU's. Thankfully I remembered I had some sour patch gummies in my car, that I had bought for the race! I didn't have any way to carry them, so I put them in my arm band, and just carried my phone. Gotta do what ya gotta do.
The sun was shining, and the weather was perfect.
At the half marathon split I saw my friend Kimberly, who was running the full. We hadn't been able to find eachother before the race started.
That was the perfect time for me to see her, because I got a little emotional again knowing that I was leaving the marathoner's. After a quick hug, we went our separate ways.

Around mile 8 and 9, I began to realize I HAD made the right decision. I started feeling good about my choice. I also decided next year I WILL do the full.

I didn't PR, but I did finish 17 minutes faster than my last half! (Wow)

My official time was 2:37.

I waited around for Kimberly to finish, and then we got to hang out for awhile. She did SO good, I'm super proud of her. She's also running the Derby Mini this weekend, so I get to see her again.

Have you guys heard of beet juice? This was in the goody bag. I haven't tried it yet, I'm a little scared! I mean beet juice?? What's next brussels sprouts juice? Yuck!!
After the race I went back to my friend's house, had some ridiculous ice cream at a little ice cream shop on the lake, then spent a couple hours in the hot tub. I highly recommend a hot tub, over an ice bath anyday!!

Next up, Saturday will be half #12, the Derby Mini! I've never ran this before, even though it's in my town. So I'm really excited!

Ready for #11

2 more days until I'm running half marathon #11!
It will be kind of bittersweet, since I've ran the Carmel marathon the past 2 years, and now will just be running the half. But, I know I've made the right decision in switching it, so I have peace about it.

I'm super excited and am going to try like heck to PR. So, that will be under 2:23.

I've had some really good runs lately, and can tell I'm pushing myself more. For instance, I don't walk up the hills, I run them! I tell myself I can walk when I reach the top. Of course then I want to keep on running.

This section of the park I run in smells soooo good. I don't see any flowers around, so I don't know if it's this tree, or what it is. I really want to do my full run right in that section so I can keep on smelling heaven.

I'll be staying with a friend in Indy this weekend, and Saturday will be spending the day with another friend I met through my blog. She's running the full!

Is anyone else racing this weekend?

Five Things Friday

Happy Friday!

Here are 5 things from my week...

1. I made General Tso's chicken for the first time. This is my absolute favorite Chinese dish, I love anything spicy! It was soooo good. I didn't spend hours on it, I just used a General Tso's seasoning packet from Kroger and made the sauce, then poured it over the chicken pieces I had cooked. It was super easy. Recipe here.

2. Spending time with my precious Xavi. I cannot get enough of him. Hard to believe he's already 2 months old!
Being held by my sweet niece
3. New running friend. We met on Instagram, and she lives in my town! We're already planning some fun adventures.

 4. I just have to share this pic. I'm so sorry. I seriously get nauseous watching him eat these things. I can't even. I mean, look at those little legs! I would rather starve.

5.  My first Stride Box! So many fun goodies. I will be using some of these on my long run today.

This weekend is going to be a happy/sad one for me. I'm going to a friend's wedding Saturday, and then Sunday going to my former Pastor's funeral. He was my pastor for 11 years and just an amazing man. One minute he was in his office preparing his sermon, the next minute, he was gone. He was 75, and in great health, it was just his time to go. The last thing he had written down was "you do not know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? It is just a vapor..." (James 4:14) Wow.

So, I'll be doing my 10 mile run today, since it'll be a busy weekend!

What is your favorite Chinese dish?
How many miles are you running this weekend?

And my decision is...

Hey friends!

If you follow me on social media, you've seen already, I have decided to switch to the Carmel half marathon, instead of the full.
Honestly, I was hoping to not have to decide until I was actually running, and then see how I feel. And at that time if I didn't think I could do the full, I could turn off with the other halfer's.
But then I found out if I did that I would be disqualified.
So I had to make a decision, and I had to make it now.
I am really disappointed.
I want to always move forward with my running, my training, even my life. But instead I feel like I've just gone backwards in so many areas.
 I mean a year ago I was training for a 100 miler!

I know this is the right decision. I'm not ready for 26.2 physically or mentally. I know this is the smart thing to do. But it still sucks.

I WILL run a marathon again. Maybe this Fall.
Even though a marathon is pure torture, it was one of the best things I've ever done. 4 times.
So I have no doubt I will do it again, just not yet.

In the meantime, I'm going to try like heck to PR this half. If this race goes anything like my 10 mile race a few weeks ago, I can do it.

Thank you all for your encouragement and support as I've been trying to figure this thing out.

Easter yumminess

And just like that, another weekend has flown by.

Saturday was my semi-long run. I didn't really have a set amount of miles I was planning on. My marathon training plan says 10, so I knew I would do at least that. I was also thinking maybe 15 or 20, since I haven't done a 20 miler yet, and my marathon is in 2 weeks.
But, that wasn't meant to be. I still haven't decided if I'm going to do the full, or switch to the half.
As I was running this 10, I was thinking ok, I'm only doing the half.
But then as I was driving home, I went back to thinking no, I want to do the full.

Gahhhh! I'm driving myself crazy. :)

We had a nice Easter. After church Jeremy and I had lunch with his Dad, while the boys went to their Mom's.
We went to Blu Italian Grille, in the Marriott. I'd never been there before, and it was delicious.
The food was amazing, we (well, I) sipped on bottomless mimosas's, as we listened to live jazz.

I promise I didn't eat all of those desserts. Just a couple bites of each!

This morning I am off to spin class and a 5 mile run. I've gotta work off all that food!

I've tricked another friend into joining me at spin. Heeheehee
Since I've been spinning, I've brought 4 or 5 friends with me, and not ONE has ever wanted to return. They always hate me afterwards, and say never again.
But I'm not giving up, hopefully this one will love it as much as I do! :)

Thank you Tara, at Running 'N' Reading for the linkup!

How was your Easter?
Did you run or race this weekend?

Three Things Thursday!

Three Things Thursday

Thing One:
My goal for March was to run 100 miles. Unfortunately I didn't make it. I was 23 miles short.
But, we're in a new month, and I am making that my goal again, for April!

Thing Two:
I signed up for the KY Derby mini marathon. I've never ran this race before, and it's only 30 minutes from me, so I'm really excited about it. It's April 25, which is a week after my Carmel Marathon. That should be fun! I'll either be doing a marathon one weekend, and a half the next, or two half's in two weekends. I haven't quite decided yet how it's going to go down...
Thing Three:
Spending the day with this little doll made my day!

In the 8 years of having my home daycare, she was closer to my heart than anyone else. I haven't had the daycare for 7 months now, but I make sure to still spend time with her. I don't want her to forget me.

What was your March mileage?

Teenager dilemma

Ok, parents/aunts/uncles/grandparents of!

A few days ago my husband let my (just turned) 17 year old stepson get a lip ring.
I was not happy. At all.
He's had his ears pierced for several years (which I didn't want either), and since then has been begging to get the guages in his ears bigger, or a tattoo, or lip piercing. My opinion is nothing else until he's 18. But that was just my opinion.

Honestly, I want to send out an email to my family, or make an announcement at church (ok, not really), that I said no!!
I can already hear the comments that will be made. So yes, I worry about what people will think of me. I know I shouldn't. But I do.

I have nothing against tattoo's or piercings. I have 3 tattoo's, and had my nose pierced years ago. When I was in my 20's.

I'm just worried about the image it portrays. When you see a teenage boy with a lip ring, your first thought isn't "oh, there's a smart young man."  In fact, it's quite the opposite.

This is extremely hard for me. Like, I'm losing sleep over it.
What's done is done, there's no changing it now.
Now I just have to figure out how to deal with it. How to deal with the comments that will be coming. I'll need to come to his defense. How do I do that, when I don't feel like it?

On the outside I am calm, cool and collected, but on the inside I am freaking out.

I should just let it go. At least he's not drinking or doing drugs or anything else. He's a good, loving kid. I just want him to look that way on the outside.

I guess I'm a little scared he'll look like this guy eventually. Haha.

Help! I am asking for your opinions... tell me to chill out, if that's what you think...
