Carmel Half Marathon Recap

Saturday I ran the Carmel half Marathon. As most of you know, I had planned on running the marathon, but decided to switch to the half instead. I knew mentally and physically, I just wasn't ready for another full.
I got to Carmel, IN Friday afternoon, and started  seeing signs for "Mile 18", "Mile 23", and then I recognized the course from where I've ran the full the last 2 years. It did make me sad. I started to doubt my decision. But it was too late, so I didn't think about it too long, I just got excited about running!

I stayed the weekend with a friend of mine who lives near Carmel, so it was nice having someone to go out to eat and hang out with. She's not a runner, so I tried my best to contain my excitement and pre-race jitters, and not talk incessantly about running to her. :)

Saturday morning when I got to the race, I realized I had forgotten my GU's. Thankfully I remembered I had some sour patch gummies in my car, that I had bought for the race! I didn't have any way to carry them, so I put them in my arm band, and just carried my phone. Gotta do what ya gotta do.
The sun was shining, and the weather was perfect.
At the half marathon split I saw my friend Kimberly, who was running the full. We hadn't been able to find eachother before the race started.
That was the perfect time for me to see her, because I got a little emotional again knowing that I was leaving the marathoner's. After a quick hug, we went our separate ways.

Around mile 8 and 9, I began to realize I HAD made the right decision. I started feeling good about my choice. I also decided next year I WILL do the full.

I didn't PR, but I did finish 17 minutes faster than my last half! (Wow)

My official time was 2:37.

I waited around for Kimberly to finish, and then we got to hang out for awhile. She did SO good, I'm super proud of her. She's also running the Derby Mini this weekend, so I get to see her again.

Have you guys heard of beet juice? This was in the goody bag. I haven't tried it yet, I'm a little scared! I mean beet juice?? What's next brussels sprouts juice? Yuck!!
After the race I went back to my friend's house, had some ridiculous ice cream at a little ice cream shop on the lake, then spent a couple hours in the hot tub. I highly recommend a hot tub, over an ice bath anyday!!

Next up, Saturday will be half #12, the Derby Mini! I've never ran this before, even though it's in my town. So I'm really excited!

  2. I'm the hot tub camp. I much prefer it to the ice bath and feel it does more for my muscles.

  4. Great job! You should be really proud of your accomplishments - both the time, but also the wonderful attitude you have about running the half instead of the full. Such an inspiration! Good luck at Derby! I loved that race last year, and I was sad that it's the same day as Country Music this year. We decided to stay in town and run it since I've never done the half and Will is running the full. I hope you have another great race!!

  5. Nice job finishing so much faster than your last half! I know you had some moments when you wished you had run the full, but how much better to finish fast and strong than to struggle through another 13.1 miles. You absolutely made the right decision and I'm sure it made you all the more excited to run the full next year when you're ready!
I've only taken ice baths a couple times...not a fan! I much a prefer a nice hot bath after long runs.

  6. A 17 minute improvement is amazing.
I think maybe taking some time off the full and focusing on a half PR might be the way to go.
    You did amazing.

(That is what I am doing this year.)

  7. I had sour patch kids in a race once towards the end they handed them out, and can't say I swallowed them, but I did enjoy sucking on them for a minute before spitting them out, they were great!!!!
That is awesome about improving so much from your last one, I bet it was because you trained so well since you were originally gearing for the marathon, so awesome though great job!!!!!

  11. First, awesome job! My last half in Savannah in November was a 2:37 AND started as a marathon I ended up dropping to a half in! We're twins. Second, my dietitian tells me all the time that beets are great for endurance athletes. I unfortunately hate hate hate them. Like really hate them. I've tried different ways and to me they always taste like dirt. Let me know if that's actually good. Finally, send me a pic of what you'll be wearing Saturday and I'll look for you! I'll be out cheering near Churchill Downs bc it's only like a mile from my house!
