KY Derby Mini Marathon rainy recap

This weekend I ran half #12, the KY Derby half marathon. Even though I live in KY, this was my first time running it, and I already know I will do this every year from now on. It was awesome.

Friday was a beautiful, sunny day, and Sunday was going to be the same. Saturday- not so much. There was a 100% chance of rain all day. The good thing is the temps would be in the 50's. I don't mind rain, I just don't want to be cold!

I met Erin at 6:30 Saturday morning and we headed to the race. It was overcast, but not yet raining.
The race started at 7:30, and the rain started around 7:45.
For at least half of the race it was just a steady drizzle, not real hard. Then I think it was around mile 9, the rain started coming down fast, and it didn't stop. It was crazy!
I was very glad I wore a rain jacket and a hat. I made the mistake of not wearing a hat once during a race in the rain, and I could hardly see because of the makeup in my eyes. Never again!

My absolute favorite part of the race was running through Churchill Downs. I've only seen pictures or watched the derby on tv, I hadn't seen it in person. It was incredible.
(Obviously not my pic, because the sun is shining.
I'm sorry, I don't remember where I got it, but thanks to whoever took it!)
I'd always heard that this race has good crowd support, and that was so true. Even in the pouring rain, there were so many people out cheering us on. The volunteers were awesome too!

Every race I always hope for a PR, which would be 2:24. But I knew if that didn't happen, I wanted to beat my time from last weekend's half, which was 2:37.

I felt so good during the race. No knee pain, no other aches, I just felt great. I was running almost the whole time, which made me so happy. I usually do a lot of walking, especially towards the end, but I could just tell that I was getting stronger and didn't need to walk as often. I was so happy!! Yes, even in the pouring rain, I was having a blast.

I get to the finish line, and see that I beat last weeks time by 4 minutes, it was 2:33. Yay!!!

After the race I got to meet up with my love, Kimberly, again. She ran a full last weekend, a half this weekend, and next weekend she's doing the Flying Pig. She's amazing!!

I felt so good! This was a time I thought, "Ok, I could've ran the full..." Maybe next year. :)
I am SO happy to report that I got no chaffing, no blisters, no nothin'! Just a perfect race, even in the rain.

I also have to give a shout out to the amazing Rennay. She was standing out in the rain cheering us on at mile 8. Seeing a familiar face and hearing my name was just what I needed. Thank you girl!!

Who else ran this weekend?

  1. It is great to hear your race recap and how excellent it went. I don't mind running in the rain either if it is now cold like you. That run because t shirt looks pretty neat. I'd like to see what all the reasons are. Great Pictures!

    1. Thanks Mark! I haven't even read all the reason on the shirt yet, I'll let you know.

  2. I ran RnR Nashville was supposed to rain and for whatever reason we had almost perfect weather! I was sure I was going to get rained on.
Glad to see that you had a great run even with the weather challenging you! That is incredible! Great job!

  3. I am so happy you loved the race...
I am clearing my calendar RIGHT NOW so I can do it again!!!
I am so jealous of the shirts this year... they are so cute!!!
Good for you on your whole race!!!!

  4. Congrats again on an awesome race! I'm actually surprised I recognized you because there were soooo many faces but the pic of your outfit definitely helped!

  5. Congrats on a great race! So glad you felt good and strong for so much of this one. Way to be awesome!

  6. 4 minutes faster in weather like that, you'll get a PR soon.

  7. Congrats on your race! Sounds like you embraced the rain and still had a blast despite it! I am with you, I am a hat runner, for many reasons, but especially for rain!!!
When I visit KY for a marathon, I want to do this particular one, because I think it would be fun to get to run on the race track:)

  8. Congrats on a fabulous race! I loved running it last year! I'm glad you are feeling stronger and getting faster again. You'll PR before you know it!!

  9. So glad you had a great race!! I know what it feels like to run in the rain and it sucks. I had the same experience with the rain for Rock N Roll DC except is was frigid too! LOVE the race shirt!!

    1. Yes it does suck! I'm very glad this one wasn't cold too, that would've been miserable. Thanks Sue!

  10. Congrats on a rainy one! I'm impressed that you didn't get any blisters. The race shirts are too cute! Great job girl! :)

  11. I love that shirt! So glad you had a good race despite the rain. :)

  12. I'm not a hat runner but I've never raced in the rain. Glad you had a good time in the rain.
