It's a porcupine, it's a fish

It's Friday, so that means my quiet, peaceful week of house sitting is almost over.
This has been a daily occurrence.
 I am now in week 2 of marathon training, so Wednesday I went for my 4 mile run, and had the best thing ever happen to me.
I passed this little family probably 4-5 times, and each time they would all clap and cheer for me. How cute is that?? They didn't even know me!

My last time around I gave them high fives and decided I was going to the store to bring them back some ice cream. And that's what I did. BEST DAY EVER.

My sister and brother in law have a massive fish tank in their house, which is so beautiful, it should be in an aquarium.

Walking past it, I saw this interesting looking 'thing'.  I thought it was some kind of decoration in the tank, but when I looked later it was gone.
Kinda freaked me out. I then saw it in a different place and realized it must be some kind of fish? Or baby porcupine? :) I'm not sure...
Nemo is pretty cool too.

Fun in the sun

Well, week one of marathon training for the Indy Monumental is done. Only 17 more weeks to go.

Tuesday- 3 miles
Wednesday- 3 miles
Friday- 5 miles
Saturday- 6 miles
Weekly mileage- 17 miles

It does feel strange only running 6 miles for my long run, when I can do so much more, but I really want to follow my plan.

This week I am house sitting for my sister while her fam is on vacay. I feel like I'm the one on vacation though. She has a beautiful house out in the country. It's so quiet, all you hear are birds singing and the sound of the pool pump.
 No loud neighbors, no neighbor kids who play basketball 24/7, no interstate noise, just peace. It's lovely.

There's been a lot of this going on.

I may have gotten a little burned. (I don't use sunblock on my legs) Ouch!

My brother in law made a running path for me. So sweet!

I wonder if she would mind if I move in with her...

Ok, back to the pool I go.

5 Things Friday!

Happy Friday!

1. My boy got his drivers license. He bought a big ol' loud, redneck truck that needs a paint job- which he loves.
Watching him drive away by himself for the first time was hard. He's my baby boy! I married his Dad when he was 6, so I've been in his life for more than half of it. Time goes by so fast...

2. Fresh fruit!
Frozen mango makes the BEST snack.
I have been eating too much watermelon lately. Like, I could finish one off in 2 days.
Pretty sure I could be a Fruitarian. Well, a Fruitarian who also eats ice cream.
*I learned the hard way, do not eat huge servings of watermelon in one sitting. Oh dear lord, it can cause some serious damage to your GI system, which creates a lot of pain.You're welcome.*

3. I was pretty excited to be mentioned by the Hungry Runner Girl!
4. What I've been doing lately.
Freezing squash, and canning pickles. I need to keep trying with the pickles though, I went them crispy, not soft. 
5. I recently joined Gwynnie Bee. It is a clothing rental service catering to women size 10-32. I'll talk more about it later, but I love it!
If I like the dress, I can keep it as long as I want, and then send it back and they send me another one. 

 As you can see, I've had some good ones, some not so good.

Stride length confusion

I've been really confused about something lately.
I recently read on Instagram someone who said her coach told her to shorten her stride when she runs, and that it would help her, and she said it really has.
 I thought that sounded interesting. I remember hearing that in order to run faster, you need to lengthen your stride. Now, I'm 5'11, so I think I already have a pretty big stride, and that's never seemed to help my speed!

But, I thought what could it hurt, I'm going to shorten my stride when I run, and see if it helps.
I've been doing that this week, and it really seems to help! I'm not sure that I'm much faster, (although Saturday's 5k was pretty fast for me) but I can run a much longer distance without feeling like I need to walk. I feel like I have more energy and don't need as many walk breaks.

It seems like shortening your stride would have the opposite effect, and you would lose energy because you're taking more steps to cover the same distance.

Does anyone have an opinion or experience with this?

Chasing buffalo and marathon training

Hey guys!
 I hope you all had a nice, long weekend!

For a few months now my laptop has been on it's death bed. Every day I wanted to smash it to a million pieces and help it die a quick death, because it was soooo slow. Well, last week it finally kicked the bucket.
I have a friend who works on computers, so I gave it to him, and he sorta brought it back to life. Sorta, meaning it's working pretty well again and is slightly faster.

So, I have rejoined the blogging world.

This weekend I ran the Buffalo Chase 5k. This was my 3rd year running this race. It's a beautiful course on the Buffalo Trace Distillery grounds. They've been making bourbon there for over 200 years. You can smell the mash along part of the course. Not a smell I'm fond of, although I do like bourbon.

When I picked up my packet I was not surprised to see another ugly shirt! (Previous 2 years were an orange and then a tan) I tried to give it away, but nobody wanted it. They need to have a female on the tshirt design committee.

James-Etta and I got there about 45 minutes early, walked around the gift shop, used the bathrooms and then it was time to run!
 Surprisingly, it wasn't even raining. I think it's been raining every race I've done this year. It was cloudy, but still pretty muggy.
   I was expecting my time to be around 35 minutes, that's been my average lately. So, I was shocked when I finished in 33:10! That's not an overall PR, but it is my 5k PR for the year.
 And James-Etta got a PR on only 3 hours of sleep!

I then spent the rest of the day at an exciting family reunion on Jeremy's side. (You know those things are always exciting)
We had a long drive, so I stretched out in the back seat with my pillow and my Beats and tried to sleep. Unfortunately, sleep didn't happen.
 We got home at 8:30, and I was in bed by 9:30. No fireworks for me, I could hardly keep my eyes open.

Today starts my marathon training for the Indy Monumental. I'm super excited! I love being on a plan, and having a schedule to follow. I just do better when someone's tellin' me when and how far to run.
