5 Things Friday!

This is going to be one of the busiest weekends of my life...fer real. So, let's get right to it.
5 things from my week!

1. I haven't talked about my weight loss for awhile. I'm still on Medifast, but it's going very, very slow. I'm not sticking to it completely. It's such a low calorie plan, and with all of my exercise, it's hard. So, I usually eat more calories than I'm supposed to. But I try to keep them healthy calories. 12 lbs. down so far.

2. I didn't say I always keep it healthy though. Case in point. Sometimes you just need to hide some wine in a coffee cup, do some shopping and eat an Auntie Anne's pretzel with your best girlfriend. (Have you had one of those? Ridiculous!)
3. I've been going on lots of walk/runs with my baby. I feel like I'm learning something new, running with a stroller. It's not a running stroller, but I make it work. That is a crazy good workout, and I love it!

4. Last night I went to my stepson's ROTC awards program. I am so, so proud of Jonah. He's a sophomore, and will be going into the Marine's when he graduates.
This is my sweet boy. He is so loving and kind. On the outside he's all tough and gruff, but inside he's the sweetest boy ever.  He often tells me that I look really nice. He just melts my heart.

5. And finally... half marathon #22 tomorrow. I'm running the Kentucky Derby mini.
Tonight is my oldest stepson's prom. While he's at the prom, Jeremy and I, my mom and dad, and my sister and her husband are going out in their limo! (My brother and nephew are also seniors, going to the same prom)
 After that, I'm meeting some out of town friends at their hotel here in Louisville, and will be staying with them for the race tomorrow.
Then Saturday night Jonah is going to a prom with a friend. Then Sunday I'm going to a wedding. 2 Prom's, a race, and a wedding all in the same weekend. I already need a nap!

Looks like we're going to get rained out during the race. Fun times! At least it'll be warm. :)

Weird pain and a going away party

Saturday I ran my last 'longish' run until the KY Derby mini next Saturday. The weather was absolutely perfect, I'm hoping it will be the same on race day.
After my run, once I got back home, I started having horrible back pain. I couldn't even bend over, I could hardly move. If I did move the wrong way, I had a breathtaking, searing pain on the lower right side. It was crazy! Yesterday was better, but it was still painful. My friend April said that happened to her before, and it was because she would hunch over as she ran.
I realized that I do that too when I run, I see it in my race pics! So, I will be more intentional about straightening up when I run. Hopefully this won't happen again!

We had a going away party for my youngest sister and her husband. They're going to Zimbabwe for 4 months on a mission trip.
 Ok, I'm a little jealous. What an amazing adventure they'll have!!

I'm going to miss her like crazy!!
My amazing family. (Missing my sister and her fam in WI) We all get together almost every Friday night at my parent's house for dinner. We have a blast!

 I asked Lyla to please bring me back one or two of those precious Zimbabwe (Zimbabwesi?) babies. Pretty sure she'll do it for me.

Carmel Half Marathon Recap

Saturday I ran my 21st half marathon, the Carmel Half.

You guys. This was my best race in a year. I finished in 2:37, the exact same time as last year! Which is also my fastest time since then. This race was perfect.

Jeremy wanted to come with me, so we could have dinner with his friends in Indy after the race. So we headed to Indiana Friday afternoon.
 We stayed with my friends Dave and Ginny, who I always stay with when I do races there. Ginny is actually my mom's best friend, and has been since before I was born.

We ate at Don Pablo's Friday night. I decided I will not eat Mexican food the night before a race again! I've done it before, and it hasn't bothered me, but after the not so great meal and not so great margarita, I just felt heavy and gross. Never again!

We woke up at 5:15 Saturday morning, I get ready, eat my peanut butter and banana sandwich and we drive 20 minutes to the race.
 There were 4000 runners, and they had a 5k, 8k, half and full. It was a little chilly, but I knew it was going to warm up quickly into the 70's, once the sun came out.

They had a prayer, the National Anthem was sung, and we were off at 7:30!
I really love this course. It goes through a few nice neighborhoods, but it also goes on the Monon trail, which is just beautiful. Carmel is such a pretty town. It was voted #1 best place to live in the US by Money magazine. I would love to live there if it was near a beach.  :)

I really, really wanted to do good at this race. Of course I always want to, but I knew this was a fairly flat course, and I wanted to really push myself and do my absolute best.

So, that's what I did. I usually run nonstop for about the first 5 miles, then after that I run/walk. I don't have a set method, I just do what I feel like doing.

I took my GU's at miles 5 and 10, and they had PowerAde at the water stations. The volunteers were amazing!! This is such an excellent, well organized race. Which is the reason I've done it 4 times now, and will continue to do so!

I felt great the whole time. Honestly, never once did I feel like ok, I want this to be done. I felt that good! I pushed myself to keep running, even when I wanted to walk. And then I see the finish line. And Jeremy. Then I started crying.
 I'm sure I've cried at a finish line before,  but I don't remember...
I was just overcome with emotion. Knowing I gave my all, and it paid off. Even though it wasn't a PR, that was ok. Then just seeing Jeremy there, and being so appreciative of how supportive he is of me and my running. I was so happy. That runners high lasted for hours!

 We drove back to my friends house, picked them up and went for lunch at Wolfies Grill, right on the lake. The food was great and the view was beautiful.

Jeremy and I did some sightseeing, and then met another couple for dinner, and got home late Saturday night.
 Such a fun weekend, such a fun race!!

I think I'm addicted

I think I'm addicted. Addicted to running races.
I just signed up for 2 more half's in May. I bought a bib from a friend for the Horse Capital Half on May 21. And then I signed up for the Horse Patty Half on May 14.
 Notice a theme in those races?

The description for the Horse Patty says it's a beautiful course through horse farms, but to watch your step. Ewww!
 Look at how many people ran it last year...2! They also have another half that starts a couple hours before this one. Less than 20 people ran that last year.
And I saw all of this after I signed up. Not sure what I'm getting myself into...

Tuesday night I took a spin class, with a good instructor! Love when I feel almost dead at the end of these classes. That's when I know I've had a good workout! Sick, I know. :)

I'm still going on weekly walks with a friend. Walking is SO hard! I feel out of breath and tired. It's quite strange.

Tonight I'm headed to Carmel, Indiana for half marathon #21!
This one is super special because it was where I ran my very first marathon.
What makes me really happy is that it's a flat course. I can use that after the hills at the last race.

My smallest race ever

It was a little tough waking up early again, after sleeping in all week.
But, I never get tired of seeing this girl. I mean, just look at her!

The very thought of this nanny job being over in 7 weeks is so hard to even think about. I miss this baby like crazy after one week, and the thought of not being in her life anymore....gahhh I don't want to think about it.
 When I woke her up this morning and picked her up out of the crib, she would look at me, then lay her head on my shoulder, then look at me, then lay her head on my shoulder. I think she missed me too. :)
I did decide to go ahead and do my 5k race on Saturday, and I'm so glad I did. It was cold and windy, but I still loved every moment.
Jeremy even offered to come with me, which was so sweet. He stood outside in the cold the whole time. He said if I have to be out in the cold, he would too. Of course I warmed up right away, and he froze. He's a good man.

This was the smallest race I've ever done. There was maybe 50 people. But I do enjoy small races sometime. They're just so chill and relaxing.
 And there's a higher chance of placing in small races. I was hoping that might happen, until I heard the age group was 19 and over! Whaaaat?? Whose decision was that?
 But it was still a great race!

5 Things Friday; Spring Break

Well, my Spring break is almost over. It's been super busy, but a good kind of busy.

Here's a few things from my week!

1. I got eyelash extensions. I'd been wanting them for awhile, but not bad enough to spend $100 on them. So when I got a Groupon for half off, I jumped on it! They last 3-4 weeks, and to get them refilled is only around $40-45. I definitely plan on keeping them.
She had 2 sizes, and I chose the shorter ones. Maybe next time I'll go for the Kardashian-esque lashes.
2. I got another Groupon for a hair highlighting service. This was at a salon I had never been to. I didn't even know it existed, even though it's in my small town.
I walked in the door and though "oh, crap". This place looked very junky. Like the 'Walmart' of salons. It's also a beauty supply store, so I felt like I was sitting in the middle of a dollar store, with customers walking in, buying stuff. Very, very strange.
I can't describe how bad it was. The two employees smell like cig smoke, they obviously don't care how they look. Oh, it was just bad.
 Anyway, 4 1/2 hours later, I leave and my hair looks almost exactly the same as it did going in.
Lesson learned: if a salon has to use Groupon to get business, there's a good reason for it. Stay away!!

3. I went to see my friend's new baby girl. I wasn't able to last week because she was in the NICU all week. Mom and baby are both home now and doing good. And I survived. :)

4. I got to spend time with my Dad. I do see him almost every week, when my family gets together for dinner. But with there being so many of us, it's hard to get much one on one time.
 So, it's very nice to have him all to myself for a couple hours. I've always loved that since he owns his own business, he can stop and chat anytime.

 5. Tomorrow I'm running the Shoes for Orphans 5k, here in my town. I've heard that, so far, there's only 40 runners signed up. Why? Because it's going to be 27 degrees!! In April!
 I know I'm going to be super tempted to just stay in my nice warm bed. I'll say "it's only 3.1 miles, I can go for a run later".
Then I'll say "it's only 3.1 miles, I can come home and take a hot shower!"
Which will I choose? I don't know.... no matter what, I already bought and donated a brand new pair of shoes, and that's what's important. Right??

Run the Bluegrass half marathon Recap

Saturday I ran half marathon #20, Run the Bluegrass.
They say this is America's prettiest half, but also the toughest. I totally agree with both of those statements!

This race has a later start, 9 a.m., which is nice since I live an hour away, I don't have to wake up super early.
I woke up at 6, got ready, ate my peanut butter and banana sandwich, and headed to Lexington.
My first stop was to pick up Kim from her hotel, so her hubby and kiddos could sleep in. I love that we only live a couple hours from eachother, so we do a lot of the same races, which means I get to see her a lot!

We got to the race at 8, thankfully the sun was shining, but it sure was chilly!

I last ran this race in 2013, and it has more than doubled in size since then. This year there were 5,000 runners!
 We sing the National Anthem, which is one of my favorite parts of every race, and off we go.

The hills started immediately. And they last the whole 13.1 miles. No breaks, no time to relax, because as soon as you do, there's another hill. (46 total)
My first 3 miles were under a 12 minute pace, but I knew that wouldn't last.
I had decided I wasn't going to worry about my time though, I was most likely going to walk the hills, and I was going to just enjoy the beauty and have a good time.
The course was absolutely beautiful! Countless horse farms, with thoroughbreds grazing or running along side of us.

 This race also has a 7 mile option. As I was running I started talking to another runner who told me he missed the 7 mile turn off! He said well, this will be his first half marathon. He wasn't ready for it, and seemed pretty bummed. I tried my best to cheer him up. I never saw him again, I hope he was ok.

Now, I had heard about mile 9. It was basically a never ending mountain. So I was prepared, bring it on! And it did not disappoint. That baby was tough. There was not one person around me running up that one.
 About hills: I want to get better at them! My plan is to do some hill training this Spring. I loathe them, but I want to beat them. I want to be the one running up them. There is nothing wrong with walking them AT ALL, but I always want to push myself and get better. When I see people running hills, I always feel a twinge of "I wish I could do that". That is my goal!
Before the race started, I heard someone calling my name, and it was my friend Tammy. She decided at the last minute, along with her non running boyfriend and his son, to run the half!
We found eachother again around mile 11, and she was in a lot of pain. (She hadn't ran at all since our marathon in Nov.!) So I walked with her for about a mile and a half.
Around mile 12.5 I ran on ahead so I could run in the last little bit.
My time was 2:58, I was glad to see it under 3!
This is what greeted us at the finish line: Bourbon ball doughnuts! I can't describe how good they were. Although I only ate about half of mine. I just can't eat right after a race, unless it's a banana.
I later found out these will be available at Thornton's soon. Oh man....

Tammy came in right after me, she did so good for not running for 4 months! Her boyfriend beat me by a few minutes, and his son (neither who had run before) came in at 2:18! How is that even possible??

Kim did so good too! One of these days I'm going to beat her ;)

 I had a great time, even with all those hills. This is such a great race, I would recommend it to everyone!
I may have said a few times this is the last time I'm doing this one though... :)

This is how I ended my night. See, I don't have much willpower when it comes to ice cream. It was worth every calorie!

Some cake and a very long concert

I am so glad I'm on 'Spring Break' this week. I need it to recover from my weekend!

Friday night my family got together at my twinnie's house for dinner.
I carb loaded for my half marathon Saturday, by eating a couple salads. Ok, I guess that's not carb loading.
But I did have a couple bites of the amazing chocolate buttercream birthday cake she made for my niece's birthday.

I mean look at this! Her talent is incredible.

Then Sunday we took the Youth Group to Winter Jam. Stood in line for 2 1/2 hours, then went into the concert, which lasted 5 hours. 5 hours, people! Gahhhh.
 It was fun, it was just very long. I got home about 1 a.m.

Totally random, but I was so excited to see watermelon's in the store again. My favorite fruit ever!
Until I saw the price....since when is watermelon $7??? Seriously?

Half #20 and a weight loss update

I'm so glad it's Friday! And next week is Spring break, so I'm off all week. It's going to be glorious.

Tomorrow I'm running half #20, Run the Bluegrass.
I still have a hard time believing it! My very first half was Sep. 2012. I remember the start of my running journey. I remember the exact moment when I said to myself after finishing a 5k, "there's no way I can ever run more than 3 miles!!"
 How things have changed! I am so glad they have, because I absolutely adore running.

Last night I went to the expo and packet pickup. I ran into a couple friends I hadn't seen in a long time, which is always fun!
Instead of a tshirt, we got this awesome hoodie. And it's actually true to size, for once!
After the expo I got together with my sweet friend, Charity. Every time I hang out with her, I am more and more grateful for true friendships that last. A friend who actually loves you through thick and thin. Someone who doesn't disappear at the first sign of trouble. Someone who persues you as much as you persue them. 10 years and going strong!

 Weight loss update:
As of this morning, 3 weeks after starting Medifast, I have lost 11 lbs. It's amazing how different I feel just from 11 lbs!
Week 1: 6.5 lbs
Week 2: 1/2 lb
Week 3: 4 bs
I was so disappointed with week 2, but then I remembered even the Biggest Loser contestants have horrible second weeks, no matter what. Glad I stuck with it!

The course for the race tomorrow is super hilly. Probably the hilliest course I've ran. (I did this race a couple years ago) I always try to do my best and give it my all, but I'm not going to stress about it.

 I'm going to enjoy the beautiful scenery, the horse farms, the horses running along side of us, and even the rolling hills.
 And I'll be incredibly thankful that I get to do this!
