The race that wasn't, and a small change

Saturday I was supposed to run the Horsepatty half marathon. Buuuut...I didn't.

It's Jeremy's fault. He talked me out of it! :)
But I later agreed that it was probably for the best.

Why, you ask?
1. It's a 2.5 hour drive each way.
2. It was supposed to be cold and rainy. Meaning I would have a long drive home in cold, wet clothes- miserable.
3. The RD sent out an email saying to beware of stray dogs, mean roosters, coyotes, and other creatures. (That just added to the excitement for me!) The course was on country roads.
4. It was a tiny race, so I probably wouldn't be missing out on too much.

I did look at the results, and this year there were actually 4 people who did it. Come on, they doubled in size since last year!
They had another half that started 2 hours earlier, and that one had 40 participants.

I still got a run in though. It was a chilly day, and I was not happy about digging out my winter running clothes again! This weather is crazy.
I had a great run. Again, in a new to me park. It was beautiful.

I do have another half on Saturday, the Horse Capital half. I did this one last year, and I can't wait to do it again!

As for the small change...I cut all my hair off. Yes, I cut it. I'd been considering getting it cut for awhile, and finally just got to a point where I couldn't wait anymore. (Even though I have a hair appt. Thursday!)
I took out my kitchen scissors and chopped it off. After the first snip, I freaked out a little. But it was too late, I had to keep going.
This was before, very damaged and dry. No amount of argan oil or conditioning treatment helped:

And after:

I'm still getting used to it, but I think I like it.
Interesting enough, Facebook sent me this memory the day after I cut my hair.
That's a lot of hair cut in the past 6 years!

So, that was my exciting weekend. Tell me about yours!

  1. HOLD UP - you cut it yourself?!?!?!? That's hilarious - & awesome! It looks so good!!!
& good for you making the call to not do a race. That's all about making the decisions to do what you need to do in a moment.
Yeah - a long ride in cold wet clothes? Not fun.

  2. Oh, I didn't realize you did it yourself either. I thought someone else cut it. How did you get it so perfect? Is there a secret to it?

Sometimes not participating in a race is the best thing for us at that time. I signed up for my Saturday race about 2 months ago and was having major doubts about it Saturday morning. I should have listened to my gut feeling and stayed home. You know how my race turned out! Lol.

    1. I just pulled each side around to the front and chopped away! I guess I'm lucky I didn't screw it up!
Yea, if only you knew what would happen at your race ahead of time. I hate that you got hurt, but I'm glad it's not worse!

  3. Glad you got in a run. I have not ran in a while due to allergies and a cold.

  4. Your hair looks awesome!! I would look a hot mess if I tried to cut my own hair.
This weekend I ran a 25k...It started out perfect running weather - cloudy, high 40s. Then, we got rain. And then wind. And then HAIL!! At the end of the race it was in the low 40s, windy, and totally miserable. The free beer couldn't even tempt me to stay outside. Brrr! My clothes were soaked from both sweat and rain and I was just done! I'm totally over the cold weather, too! It's mid-May for crying out loud!

    1. Lol! Thank you!
Oh my gosh, that sounds absolutely miserable!! I have never been hailed on during a race. I'm with you, I would go home and drink my own beer. Great job for pushing through that!

  5. First of all...your hair looks A-MAZE-ING!! Seriously. Amazing!! You'd think a professional salon did the cut. I did...up until you mentioned that you cut it yourself.

I also think it was for the best you missed that half. I don't like encountering wild animals on my runs or races, LOL!! Not a fan. Nope nope. BUT...good luck this coming weekend with Horse Capital. My friend, Kelsie, ran this one for me (I transferred my bib last year when I was not able to run) and she loved it. I will do it eventually...but Geist is where I'll be this weekend. HAVE FUN!

    1. Thank you, Karen! I thought for sure I was going to mess it up, I'm surprised I didn't! :)
Horse Capital really is a great race. Have a great time at Geist!!

  6. Unless the pre-race goody bag included a can of pepper spray or some other protection from wild animals, I would have skipped it too! But still only 4 people ran it? Goodness! Your hair looks great! I've tried cutting my own hair before when I was in college and ended up butchering the back of it where I couldn't see and couldn't really reach. Yours looks MUCH better than my attempt!

I don't think I've gotten a run in since the KDF half. I tried a couple times but need to get some new shoes. Well, and the weather hasn't been conducive to running for no reason ... ANOTHER reason why I need a race to train for to keep me accountable. ;)

  7. You cut off your own hair??!! That is seriously awesome! It looks fantastic!

I wouldn't have wanted to run that half either. I am not up for being chased by various creatures down farm roads in the middle of nowhere!

Enjoy your half this weekend! I hope the weather is better and you have a great race!

    1. Yes I did! Thank you! It would've been nice if we had known about the creatures sooner than the night before the race.
So far, it looks like storms again for Saturday's race. I give up!

  8. I give you huge props for cutting off your own hair. I've cut my own hair before, but not like that, just trim here or there in the front.
Sometimes I wish I had the guts to go short.
I cut 4 inches off my hair last week, no one noticed, LOL that is when you know your hair is too long, LOL
You look awesome, what a great new style for your upcoming adventure in a few weeks!!!
